Default What fluid is in clutch?

I'm "helping" a friend replace my clutch master and slave cylinders shortly. He said get a quart of fluid--not silicon based. Is the fluid in an '87 clutch just brake fluid? If so do I just get the latest DOT spec brake fluid? How do I know for sure it's not silicon based. Thanks much.

BTW...is one quart enough?

Yup just some ole' DOT III brake fluid. :) The lines are really small a quart should be plenty enough to spill and fill. :)

I use Valvoline Synpower Brake fluid. Good stuff.

I prefer clutch fluid since it keeps the clutch from squeeking/squealing in the cold.

I have NEVER heard my clutch squeek due to using Valvoline.

And it gets cold around here.

I use the same fluid I do for brakes. It is the Valvoline Dot3/4 synthetic.

how bout some GM clutch fluid. #12345347
it has some friction modifiers in there, not just dot 3/4
read your owners manual..... pretty informative !!!

Either the GM fluid or regular DOT-3 brake fluid will work just fine. A quart should be enough to do the clutch AND bleed the brakes!! A pint can should be enough for a comple flush. When I flushed the clutch fluid on my gold car during a clutch replacement, I used Castrol DOT-3 and it took about 3/4 of the can after a couple attempts at getting a full pedal. I used some clean fluid to get all of the gunk out of the master reservoir.

Where did you get the slave cylinder? Last I looked, those were expensive puppies!

GM clutch fluid. Which is mostly DOT 3 brake fluid. DOT brake fluid will likely work fine...

Dont let the dealer tell you its just brake fluid. It has special additives in it.

If you already did it. Dont worry about it.

If you havent yet done it, get the correct GM stuff. I paid $8 for 16oz.

With regular brake fluid mine squeaked and it does not get cold here. With a change to the GM stuff it stopped squeaking immediately. Should have used it in the first place for all the time involved. It would have been worth it.

If GM wanted plain old brake fluid in the clutch system then they certainly would not have gone through the trouble of developing their clutch fluid. It has special friction modifiers in the fluid. Some can get away without any noise and some can't, and other will see premature failure or leakage of the slave cylinder as well if "brake" fluid is used.

:iagree: :iagree: If you go to ZFdoc.com bill explains why you should not use brake fluid.

Is the fluid in an '87 clutch just brake fluid?
Yes, and the Brake Fluid in the '87 is just hydraulic fluid. There is nothing special between them, you could run transmission fluid(another hydraulic fluid), or the high temp Aviation quality 5606, it's all just hydraulic fluid.

Friction modifiers? BS! Its just hydraulic fluid.

That said, I like the synthetic stuff because of its high tolerance to heat.
