L98 Valve Adjustment - Best Conditions for Adjustment?
When adjusting valves with aftermarket roller rockers (without engine running), what are the best conditions for the most accurate adjustment? Engine cold? Engine warm? Does it matter if the engine has not been started for several days?

For a hydraulic cam, it makes no difference. Unless you are setting the preload at the absolute minimum, then I like to set them with the engine running. For solids the spec is usually stated, such as, "hot lash". In that case, I warm it up and do one side at a time. I then re-warm it to do the other. After it cools, I check to see what it is cold. Using that info, you can set them cold from then on. Good luck, and...

OK... I'm presently set at 1 full turn from zero lash without engine running (too tight I understand). If I readjust to say, 1/4 turn with engine running, I assume I back off nut until I hear clatter, tighten until clatter just stops, then 1/4 turn more. Is this correct?

Maybe it was just me, but I had a tough time hearing the clacking. So when I wasn't sure on a given rocker I would hold a screw driver up to my ear from the rocker nut and I picked up sounds I couldn't hear with the naked ear. But you may be able to pick up the clacking

I can ballpark them when cold, but
I like to have the motor warm and running so the lifters are pumped up with oil.
For a hydraulic cam, it makes no difference.
