What is the best fit headers for a L98 1990
I am currently having my L98 being built into a 383 stroker and I want to put new headers on since the engine will be out. Which aftermarket headers are the best fit for this engine without causing any problems! Thanks

What heads are you using?
Certain brands of headers have issues with straight or non-L98 angle plugs.
I used hookers on the stock heads and they fit great.

Hooker long tubes. Its actually easier to change plugs now and theres no spark plug boot clearance issues.

Hookers seem to be the brand with the least # of complaints, I can barely remember someone who complained about fitment.
2149 if you want the AIR/Smog/O2 fittings, 2151 if you dont but youll have to have an O2 bung welded into the 2151s.
I think the Hooker Y-pipe # is 16720, I do remember people complaining about its fitment though.

I am using the Hooker 2149's and they are a very nice header.
The fit is good, spark plug clearance is good, they have collectors that bolt to a Ypipe, and the coating is good.

I have the TPIS long tubes w/ matching 3" Y. Headers fit nice, use stock bolts & have never loosened on me like regular header bolts. Has smog fittings, air & EGR but you have to fit an EGR tube from a camero or something like that. TPIS gives you a part #. I used all the smog cr#p until the last rebuild, now capped off & works great. I am NOT using a heated O2 sensor but will be doing some testing soon to see how well the stock one is reading. Y pipe is a slip fit & can be a bit#h to install over the coated headers. Some light sanding on the header & grinding inside the Y this last time made for a quick & easy install. No other clearance problems at all. A bit expensive but I would say you get what you pay for.

I just have 1 question, doe the 3 inch Y pipe fit on the stock cat? and if not, then I'm guessing you got a high flow cat? or not cat at all? and what about the cat back exaust system, is it a good idea to keep the 2.25 inch cat back exausth? or go with a 3 inch?

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but what about ground clearance? Does anyone have their car lowered with headers? Anyone have a part number for the shorties?

Anyone have these Hookers on a roadster? I remember a thread where some headers hit the X-brace under the car.
thanks

ground clearance is NOT a problem, they tuck up nicely into stock area. I am still using the stock converter. Would like to go to a high flow but just haven't yet. I had to have the clamp dent pushed out by a muffler shop, to install onto the new Y. Not easy up here as no one had a big enough bender for that size pipe. Finally found a guy that knew his equipment & how to "cheat" it. I have the power effects cat back & it flows pretty good too. I also just installed a roadster X-brace & had to notch it just a little bit on drivers side but only because the pipe is in a diff. place from where the stock notch was.
Heres an old pic (pre x-brace) note you can see the headers are only a little below the oil pan level.

It came no where near clearing the trans pan on one side. I had to cut the corner section off and weld a better one to make it clear the trans pan.

Hooker 2149s fit fine, their Y-pipe was awful for me at least.

I've got the Hooker 2149s on my 90 vert and they fit fine with no X-brace or clearance probs. Installing was a PITA but no more than expected. Had to make the dimples for the bolts bigger. The hooker Y-pipe didn't fit quite right because they had to stamp part of the pipe for those w/ auto trannies. It would be nice if they sold two different types so those with ZF6s don't have to mess around. Changing plugs is a little easier than stock.
My Dad's 86 has LPE headers on it and they suck. Changing plugs is a real challenge (worse than stock) - takes about 2x as long as on the 90. I don't know how many wires have melted - there is no way to reliably keep the wires away from the headers. Plus any coating on them has long since rusted away( <10K miles).
Food for thought.

Re: (Professor)
hmmm so you have to remove the X brace from you Convertible?? hmmm I'm not sure I'd be willing to do that.
would they still fit with the X brace in place, if so would any modification be required?
