Ie tried to make this light come on for 6 years. Thought the bulb was fried. Now @ 1800 rpm, 48mph steady cruise it comes on. What triggers it? Vacuum signal? speed sensor? Wish I had the bugs out of this new combo.
Mine comes on also when I stay at a steady speed on the hightway and forget to put the car in overdrive. It comes on when I stay around 45 to 55 mph for a certain period of time. It's supposed to tell you to shift for better economy. Mine works as far as I know :yesnod:
BC85, Whats up? Been working on this car for 2 weeks. Cam, heads, Intake. What a pain. Drove it to work today, first time. Still got bugs to work out..A real pain. Whats going on at your end ? Ready to drag race?? :chevy
At least Im not the only one wondering about this. I seriously thought the bulb was fried. Now the cars not running right I can make it come on at will. Does anyone really know how it works?
MIne used to come on all the time after I rebuilt the tranny. It wouldn't shift into OD until I re-adjusted the TV cable. Now I can't get it to come on.
"This light will come on approximately one minute after you reach crusing speed to remind you when to shift into 6 (Sixth) gear for a manual transmission and [D] (Automatic Overdrive) for an automatic transmission".
Disabled at least for the '89 auto. I believe all of the digital clusters have the light (since the only differences are between cruise and non-cruise cars. Signal is sent on the serial data line (same that carries the average fuel and range info) from the ECM to the cluster. Hard to find any info about it - Killebrew barely mentions it in his cluster repair manual and I couldn't find anything in Helms. Usually, if the serial data line is whacked, you won't get the fuel info or a check engine light. Later vehicles, such as my '97 S10, use a driver circuit to ground the light instead of the serial data line to illuminate it, so analog clusters may have a different control. However, if it's not working and it's suppose to, suspect the cluster or PROM (assuming the fuel info is being displayed and it's got a check engine light).
Mine will come on when I'm going up a hill between 40-50 mph. There's one hill around here that it always comes on at the same spot near the top. As soon as I change my speed at all or clear the crest of the hill, the light will go away.
i have an 86 A4, and mine comes on all the time in D and OD except for when the lock up torque convertor is engaged. otherwise if i'm cruising at 50+ in D it'll come on, or if i'm traveling at any speed constantly in OD  i hate it
SunCr, this makes sense now. I had the scan cable attached when it came on and gages behaved as you described. You definitley know your stuff.
