Safe to remove spare tire holder?
I just removed the spare tire and jack to reduce weight. the spare tire holder looks like it would come off easy as well. Is it safe to remove? It appears too high off the ground to serve a protective function.

When others have removed the spare, they have removed the carrier as well. The spare tire itself serves a semi-protective function. If you aren't going to keep the spare with you, I would remove the carrier as well. You might want to hold on to everything so you can always put it back on...especially if you are going on a long trip somewhere.

I've heard that the spare was designed to be part of the rear crumple zone. Just don't get rear-ended!

I don't think the plastic carrier adds much to crumple resistance but I'm not worried about that "feature", otherwise I would be driving a "Volvo". :jester If concerned about this eventuality, get the bracing used with the "Spare delete" option or fab up some bracing.
After I removed the spare & jack I left the rather light weight carrier for a stock (stealth) look.
However I put some rubber tubing around the two front supports to prevent a rattle.
