Hey guys,
I was about to head for a party this evening, but noticed my spare tire was sagging so I had to loosen the release latch bolt and push the front of the tire carrier tray back into the "up and locked" position. I tightened the latch bolt, but the spare is still visible from the rear of the car and the tire carrier tray can still go further up. There was this metal piece (looks like a tongue depresser; 4 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, and it's taco'd at one end) wedged between the bolt attached to the tire carrier tray and the assembly the bolt goes through, but for the life of me, I can't get this metal piece wedged back into place. I can probably drive to the party with the spare tire in its current state, but I'd rather fix it before I jet. Any suggestions or a diagram would help greatly! I checked the jack instructions and my Haynes manual (no help).
Ya know what? You're right! I don't neeeeed no steeeenking spare tire and jack! I get my car towed when a flat occurs anyhow. Thanks for the voice of reason.
Take the whole unit off and remove your jack. You'll save some weight!
:iagree: I think it cleans up the whole rear end, too. :yesnod:
The spare tire is part of teh energy absorbing system for protection in case of a rear-ender type of accident. Might not be a good idea.
When run-flats were introduced in the last couple of C4 models, GM replaced the spare tire and carrier with an H-shaped piece of aluminum that bolted onto the frame at various points. It was designed to crumple in the same fashion that a spare would when hit from behind.
I took my spare out, and part of the metal was broken up top where the bolt goes so when I was getting my exhaust put on, had the shop cut above the threaded area, cut a piece off of it, then weld it back together, now when I screw the bolt in, the back of the tire carrier hides itself even more than before.
