Getting a code 42 even after replacing module and checking connectors.
Yeah...
I can't say it's "driving me crazy" but I am stumped at this point.
After spending $66 on a Borg-Warner NASCAR Select ignition module because my fav auto parts place was out of the "cheaper one" and after checking the connectors in the distributor and even soldering a few of the suspected crimped-on wires, I can get the code 42 to clear for awhile but it always comes back, marked by a rough idle.
Any suggestions from anyone what else I can check?

I had this same problem 3 times on different vehicles. The first time it was in fact the module. The second time I had a break in the wire that you disconnect to set timing. Soldered in a new connector and wire. The third time it turned out to be the ecm. I followed the troubleshooting tree in the service manual to find out it was the ecm. If you need further help I can dig out the book and check out the trouble tree and post info

Jim you may have an intermittent open circuit in the EST line to the ECM from the distributor. Use an ohm meter and check all the connections from the distributor to the ECM. You should not have any more than 3 ohms between the two points.

I had a 42 (or 43- cant remember now) when I changed ECM's. I got some advice here from forum members, checked that damn brown wire a hundred times. Checked all my other connections over and over again. Then I tried another 165 ECM i had a voila, no more code.

I too have code 42 but i almost gave up cause there's almost no cure for it.
The only people that fix it are the ones that change the ecm, but i don't want to start throwing money and then find out that it wasn't the ecm.

Yeah, I'm with you.
There's not much chance getting all those 17 year-old brittle plastic plugs replaced so I have hardwired more than one connection, eliminating the connector.
I check things out so much on my car I'm seriously thinking of putting two rocker switches on the instrument panel. One for opening up the EST connection to set timing. The other for grounding the ALDL plug.
