Emissions trick
Ok, I have to pass this on because it works so well. Before you get your emmissions test, run the gas tank until it is almost empty. Then immediatly before the test, pour a bottle of rubbing alcohol into the tank. (don't let Mr inspector see this)
I have done this 3 times, on the Vet as well as my Celica. each time they both put out ridiculously low emmissions-way below the normal.

I've heard this one. We're starting to nave emissions inspections this year in the Hickory area, Catawba county. I'll give it a try. Hope they don't give my car a breathalyzer test!

I did not experience any negative effects, I have been doing this the last few years on both cars. The only thing I got to thinking about, was since part of rubbing alchol is water, to some degree you are putting water into your tank. I don't think it is enough to make a difference. I use the 91% alchol as well which has less water than most alchol which is 80%
FORGET the rubbing alcohol. Just go to the ABC Store and get your car a 5th of Everclear its 95% pure grain alcohol, odorless, tasteless, and ... carefully for legitimate purposes only. Everclear, Grain Alcohol. just hold it between the lines on the way to get checked, she may tend to wobble a little with it in her tank...
HAHA...

I believe the alcohol trick works in part because alcohol burns much hotter and cleaner than gasoline. This makes your cats work better and brings down your readings. I don't think it is a cure all, but it may help push you past the no-go limits.

be carefull of rubbing achol, it NOT good for rubber components. Use ethynol base up 15% much better. Another alturnative is gasline antifreeze.. i used as much as 1 gallon with good results
yep it works you can by 96% methyl rubbing alcohol around here for like 1.19 a quart. about 6 quarts of that and 4 quarts of gas just before, cut emissions to a half or a 1/4th. i dont do that much in any vette, but the beaters around here we do, then go fill the tank up and drive it all out.
i think what else works? actually changing the oil and filter, especially if the piston rings are bad. i think adding a can of STP - ring sweller - "engine restore" about 300 miles or so before emissions test, then change oil to synthetic.

I have thought about rubbing alcohol, but all that *I* have seen, is 50% water. That has scared me off. The 96% you speak of... Does it have a product or brand name? What type of store carries this? I have a test coming up soon.
I had some trouble with a car passing and rubbing Alcohol the kind the sell in drug stores, Wal Mart etc made it worse. I think you're supposed to use a different kind of alcohol, I know it wasn't rubbing alcohol. BTW NAPA sells 'Guaranteed to Pass' liquid which some have used successful.
