I have an 85 with manual controls that does similar, if I have ac in max position, it blows some from defrost, some from vents, and most from near feet. Vacuum line on head unit perhaps cause this ???

In addition to what dogs said, also check blend door motor/module. The little plastic connectors like to snap with age

The unit is a 3 hose check valve which is under the plastic cover on the right side of the engine. Look for cracks and breaks on it. It's almost a sure thing that’s your problem.

When the blend door control link broke on my prior '88 (C68) the only issue was that it blew only hot air but flow direction was as programmed.

Once you remove the passenger side kick panel, it's right in your face. You'll more than likely need one of those super bendy extension deals to remove the screws holding it in. But you can always drop the kick panel and then select heat and cold from the HVAC control head and if the motor is working right, you'll see the lever arm move. Also confirm that the metal rod and plastic connector coming from the blend door that hooks it to the motor is intact. You could have a good motor and just some broken connectors

No sweat. It’s the carpeted foam pad that is bolted under the dash. Keeps your knees from banging into the underside of the dash. If I remember right, it’s two bolts holding it in that can be accessed by reaching up under there (10mm maybe?). You could probably see the motor arm and connector if you twisted yourself up enough to look under there. I’m a pretty trim guy and even I was pretzel’d on my back reaching up under there

I dont know if you'll get this but I found that the ECM module is right in front of the blend door and has to be lowered out of the way. Just an observation.
