Default custom cam question

I talked to comp cams about my setup, and that I whated a custom grind to it.
This is what they came up with. Looks pretty agressive? It looks awsome when I use it in dd2000. Make 473 CHP

it looks similiar to what my friend is putting into his carb'd 383. It isnt running yet so I cant tell you how good or bad it is. His is on a 110 cl anyway.

that's a lot of lift with 1.5 rockers. I have a cam very similar to that but mine has a 224/230 duration but it using the 3100 series lobes as well (.605/.622" lift with 1.6 rr's). I hope they told you to go with their 977 springs with that cam.

Their 3100 series lobes are among the most aggressive CompCams offers for a street engine. I'm running one on my intake lobe, but I chose 3300 series lobe for the exhaust to slow the valve down a tad.

Since you're not having any advance ground in the camshaft, you'll need to degree it in and use an offset bushing/key to hit 108.

Jake

You dont think this cam is to much for my 350 weekend warrior? I dont whant it to over heat at stop and go traffic. And I whant ( with a good tune ) be abel to pass the sniffer test in Sweden.
Jake: good point! Where can I get offset bushing/keys ?

That grind will have 30deg of overlap, which is quite a bit for a 350cid. Did you tell CC that it had to pass a sniffer?

I talked with Competition Cams regarding custom grind and other information.

My experience with them was not what I would call very positive.

As a minimum you should call back and get the advice of a second person there. Based on my experience you rarely will get the same answer twice.

At best you get opinion from their tech line.....at the worst it is actually misinformation

My last conversation was regarding rpm capability of my valve train. Their answer was don't worry about because you would never want to rev above 5800. Per dyno I make max power at 6400. So much for the CompCams tech line...

I've talked to CC several times in the past, and every time they keep insisting
a 224+ duration cam will suit my needs. I never believed it. That cam, IMHO, is WAY too much for a relatively mildly modded 350cid.

That's an awfully big hyd roller cam for a 350 street motor. (Especially on that has to pass a smog test.) I hope you have someone local that can do your programing. Unless you do, be prepared for a long, unfulfilling experience.

All I know is that's a bigger cam than I'm dropping in my 383... and my engine builder has been working on the tune for 3 or 4 days now.

Good luck with it and I hope it works out for you.

They recommended the same cam for my 408 with AFR 210's knowing it would be a street/strip car.

WAAYYY TOO Big cam for a 350 especially one for stop n go traffic. Go with the highest lift 268/272 profile on a 112 deg profile. Go 268/268 on 112 if you have a good exhuast.

If you want to skip the sniffer test go with a 272deg/272deg on a 112 (or 110d sep for more Rpm=LT1/MRII)

Now that you've asked, YES, YES, YES. I think it's too long in duration for a 350. 218/224 would be much better, but I wouldn't go any higher than 224/230 and I'd put it on 114s.

114s will broaden the torque range, increase the vaccum, smooth the idle, etc.

I've run a ton of simulations using my combination and 230/236 is even too much for my 415 with 11.28 CR. The picture would change, however, if I changed this and changed that, but based on what I'm running I lose a ton of torque and HP over almost the entire RPM band with a 230/236 cam.

I'm pulling 15" of vaccum in neutral and 13" in gear and that's with a 224/230 in a 415 CID engine. The vacuum will be even lower in a 350 which can play havoc with the power brakes and idle quality. Oh, and you can forget about passing emissions; I believe even the HotCam just squeeks by and it's a lot shorter in duration.

A 230/236 will definitely need a PROM re-burn too.

Simplest way (if you don't know how to degree in a cam) is to have the cam ground with 4 degrees of advance already in it. That way, if all else is on spec, all you'd need to do is align the dots.

All the parts places sell bushings - Mr. Gasket, CompCams, Summit Racing, even auto parts stores (here in the US) They're easy to come by.

Hope this helps.

Jake

What do your heads flow? What springs did Comp Cams recommend with that cam?
