Hi,
I've got (I think) a tapping lifter. The shop manual has the procedure for removing the lifter which shows the head being off, but never mentions doing so; it just says to remove rockers, pushrod, lifter retainer, lifter. The last pic it shows is of the block with the head off.
I only get the tapping when the engine is fully warmed up (oil~195f) and when it's idling. Reving past ~1200 makes it go away. Oil pressure is ~30 lbs at warm idle. Used a stethascope on the rocker stud. Seemed like both valves on on second cylinder from back, pass. side, had more tapping than the others. All the studs were at 18ftlbs.
I changed my oil about two weeks ago, using (for the first time) a 'hastings' filter. I swapped it for a purolator pure-one today, but there was no change.
You can pop off both your valve covers, start your car and keep an eye out for the lifters pumping oil up through the pushrods and up over the top of the rockers. Any laggers or lifters not pumping at all and its time for ALL new ones.
Cool thanks. One thing I don't get, (this has got to be a stupid question), I had the covers off, could see the vavles/springs, rockers, and pushrods going down into the head; lifters are underneath the push rods right? How do you lifters out?
thanks
Ken

You will have to pull your intake however, as your lifters are held in place with a retainer bolted in your valley. (your profile says LT4 which means roller) However, when removing your valve gear, check each rocker, push rod, valve tip, etc. for excessive wear. Any problem with these parts can make a noise too and could be an indication of bigger problems. How many miles BTW? Does everything look clean and well maintained? Best case scenario, things just need adjusted but usually they don't go out of adjustment in the first place.
