This has been addressed many times before, as most problems with c4's seem to happen over a wide band.
As i drive my car more and more. say for instance as the temperature creeps closer to the 200 mark (Specially in stop and go) for a period of time. i GEt this terrible clanking noise comming from what seems to be underneath of me. tonight was the worst. after the stop and go of the club traffic comming home. i saw a z06 who wanted to play (heh.. had to) Then i hit the gas going up (about 30 degrees angle) on the exit ramp and GLANK CLANG CLANG CRack wee.. the car seems to accelerate fine. but egads.... how embarassing is that =) anyways. it's done it before. just tonight seemed really loud and it's been starting to bug me. now. as long as i drive it for a short distance. i can gun it. whatever. doesn't make the noise. just seems to be after a longer trip (hour, hour and a half on the road) the car is a 1986 4+3(aka, peice of **** overdrive on a rock solid 4 speed) with 60k miles. not raced (other than the ocasionally play on the street) fairly stock. if you have any ideas. lemme know. and if you have AIM. message "bazzgazm" and i'll be happy to explain more or email bazzgazm@aol.com
If it sounds simular to spark knock it could be that the pre-cats are going bad. I checked your sig and it says full exhaust mods. Do you still have your pre-cats? They are in your front y-pipe. I just gutted my pre-cats on my '89 and no more noise. Hope this helps. Tim

Check all the cats first. Or should I say CHUCK all the cats first
headers w/ no cats. into stock cat (which. i know is bad.. since i've been getting all the signs lately) . aftermarket rear. i've got a test pipe for the center section all ready to go. but the noise as i said seems to be comming. I WAs wondering about u joints or something transmission related. but what throws me off. is the fact it gets bad with temp. and isn't there until it's heated up good. So. anyways. we'll see if it's in the cat. or even a mount somewhere. I jUst had the clutch replaced which as you guys know is a BIscuit with the doug nash. Anyways. we'll see.

that's your answer... either replace your cat, or hollow it out. That's whats making your noise... My 85 had similar symptons. Idled nice and quiet until warmed up then an ugly knocking noise would start... opened up the cat, and a filter piece, abou tthe size of a baseball was rattling around.
