It worked for me no problems. I used a IBM Thinkpad laptop (pentium 90 with win98se). Winadl and Moates also worked. Tunerpro worked after I manually put in the recommended dll (riched20.dll I think it was) from tunerpros web site.
What type of computer and interface are you using ?
Also what version is your 165 running ? 32, 32b, 6E, ...
Maybe I am wrong but for some reason I was thinking that the 85 had a slower xfer speed than the later ecms...not sure if it that was just a slower version of the 165 or another ecm and you have upgraded...
From what I could find on the net that laptop as one rs232 port. correct ? It can be a few different items. Give some detail as to what you are using for the rs232 adapter and cables. You might want to try winaldl to verify the hardware it seems to be the easy one to get connected. Don't forget the 10k resistor.http://winaldl.joby.se/

The laptop has one RS 232 but Ii am using the cable that came with the DATAMASTER whic is on Com 1, a serial port.
Yes, I upgraded from the 85's 870ECM to the 86-89's 165.
I will try connecting to the RS232 bu disconnecting the serial cable.
