Unsolder the chip, put it in the programmer and save the binary file.
If you think you can't desolder the original chip, take it to someone who can...perhaps at a TV repair shop.

get a tall double row header and bend the pins out on one side. Then you can plug the normal side into the memcal and the spread out portion of the header can go into the pocket programmer. I used to have a good picture of the part, but now I can't find it. Here is a memcal in the programmer, but it's hard to see the header...
maybe you can see it and get an idea. This is how I do all my chips with memcals.

I thought the EPROMs had to be removed from the CalPac to be scanned.
Use a heat sink on the chip's pins and not too much heat and you should be able to unsolder it OK. If you have a solder-sucker it will help to quickly remove molten solder (and heat) from the pins and lands. You could also try solder-wick to remove solder and heat from the area. The worst pins will be the power/ground since the lands will be larger.

nah, I read them all the time while they're soldered in the memcal. Program them that way too. So does Ed Wright. I'm sure others do too!

I don't understand what's happening here.
I've got an 86 and so does my friend, Steve, and both of our PROMs simply unplug from the 7165.
Just loosen the two clips and it pulls straight up and out.
What am I missing?
Jake

Sarkee,
Traxion describes (with pics and part nos) how to make the adapter you desire:

Jake,
The PROM is the chip under the cover on the board you are unplugging. The chip has a sticker on it with the code (ARAP, BUA, etc) of the PROM version that you can see through the cover.

Sarkee,
I have found a disassembly of the BUA code ('86 auto 3.07, iron heads), but am also lacking any bin files of any '165 code. I *may* have something on the home computer, I'll check. If you find any, please post where you found it!
