At idle the tach is reading about 3500, but its not idling that high for real. when I get on the gas the idle goes all the way to the top then drops to zero. Is there a fix for that or do I have to send the whole instrument cluster in for repair?

Check the white wire from the distributor and the resistor for the tach which is buried behind the intake on the driver's side of the motor. If you don't find anything obvious, you need to check the resistance of the tach resistor to find out if the value is within spec. Having trouble finding the procedure on that but will keep looking. Check in the tech tips section, someone had a way to make a resistor since GM doesn't anymore. Short of that, then the dash may need to be replaced.

Thank you' I'll give that a try. But I'm not quite sure what resistor your talking about. I'll look.
