I am planning come improvements of my car this winter and want to start getting my ducks in a row. Here's the proposal:
1. 190 AFR heads.
2. Cam (need suggestions)
3. MiniRam, Superram, Lingenfelder Intake/Base
4. Headers
If there is someone out there that can give me prices on the above or recommondations on combinations i.e. heads/cam/intake combinations it would be greatly appreciated.
What kind of gains and ET's would these combinations yeild. I am hoping to be in the low 12's. 11's would be great!
You guys are the wealth of informationa and I try to help out when possible, but need the advise of the experts on this one. Thanks in advance for all the help.

These are fine heads for a SBC, though I like the brodix a bit better (casting quality).
Any way you go I would buy the heads bare (as cast) and invest in a cleanup/porting by a good porter. The CNC porting done by the manufacturers is generally not worth much.

What are your goals, etc.?
1) Tranny type - if auto, stall (if manual, gear).
2) Desired Idle rpm/quality
3) Desired shift points
4) Desired performance
5) Emissions?

I would pretty much say go with the MiniRam and bump up your static compression a bit more (mill the heads) - you can run more compression with this since it is "detuned" around max cylinder pressure (peak torque) - this will come close to canceling out the low rpm torque loss, and help you greatly at higher rpm.
If you absolutley want shift points no higher than 5700-5800 then the super-ram is something to consider, but it's really not my favorite piece. I would reconsider the AFR 190's also, and try and find a smaller casting to work with if you want the super ram.
Ideally I would go with a Victor JR - you can certainly get the custom work done very easily to convert it to multi-point, but unfortunatley I can't direct you to a ready made version. We (SpeedDemon) are working on a conversion now, but it won't be ready for awhile (testing, injector placement, etc.)

Your gains, etc. are going to depend on the cam and chassis setup. With a top end on the hotter side I would look for right around 400rwhp, on the milder side anywhere from 350 on up. (depends on cam and head porting level, as well as intake).

Thanks Chris for the input. Any other comments by anyone? What do you all think of having the original heads ported/polished by a reputable shop? If so would these heads be a good combination with the miniram and hotter cam? I am looking to put the car in the low 12's minimum. How can this be acomplished?

With the AFR or brodix ported heads + mini-ram + 226+ intake duration and a good launch (1.6-1.7x) I would be looking for 11's with the setup.
I honestly can't tell you what you can do with stock heads - I really wouldn't recommend investing any money in them - they will still not be enough for a hot 350, and if you ever decide to stroke it they will be woefully inadequate, and you will be out the money you spent on porting them.
But low 12's should be a cinch - of course when you talk ET's track prep and chassis setup comes into consideration also.

I have to disagree with the stock heads being inadequate. A good porter can make these things work well. My 87 castings now flow like AFR LT1 Stage 2 racing heads, except cost a lot less and have a valvetrain that will last 100,000 miles. Head porting is an art and a good artist will make the motor scream. A hack will just cost you time and money. Email me if you want a copy of the comparison spreadsheet I made.
Will the Victor Jr. setup you're working on be made for Vettes - ie low hood? Will you be using an elbow or a horizontal TB?

Is your car an auto or a 6-speed? I ask because I have heard that auto's respond better to super ram's and 6-speeds to mini ram's. You've got some good info here already but my suggestion is to find someone who has a car similar to yours and performance where you want to be and copy their setup. Ralph have a strong L-98, check his car out.
