My air conditioner fan only operates on high speed. I changed out the fan switch on the dash but no help. I'm looking at the fan motor as the possible solution. Anybody ever change out the motor? Do I need to depressurize the system to change out the motor? Thanks for the help.

You may want to check the AC Blower Motor resistor, located in the plenum. On my 84 its located on top of the box where the coolent lines run. It has four wires (yellow, dark blue, light blue and tan. I think your best bet would be to just change it. You can get one for less then 10 bucks. Its listed at Carparts.com for $6.82.

Thanks for the suggestion Jon. It's a lot cheaper than springing for the fan moter first.

Assuming you have the manual A/C C60, there is a blower relay next to the evaporator housing outboard. When de-energized the blower voltage goes through the resistor pack that Jon mentioned, but when energized, it bypasses the resistors and goes directly to the motor driving it at high speed. I've seen these relays stick in the energized position. You may want to look at this relay too.

hey viet, the fan motor is easy to replace, you have to remove her skirt first (the part of the fenderwell on the passenger side) as this piece will not allow the motor to be pulled out of the firewall because the wheel is to deep. i replaced my motor for i think $25....so if jon's suggestion doesn;t work, it won't cost that much to shotgun a motor.

Ray, thanks a lot for the schematic. It's sure a lot easier that looking through the shop manual!!
Togo, the only thing I was worried about was the warning on the motor that the system is under pressure. I didn't know if it needed to be depressurized to change out the motor or not.
I was looking for something to do this weekend.
Thanks a lot guys.

Jack,
I haven't changed the ID block because I'm not sure if I'll be staying yet. I'm still in Tampa, where I went after the Cruise-In. I'll be here until at least the 20th of August. Once I find out when I'm leaving here and know where I'm going next, I'm going to try to get to the NCM Labor Day event. Are you going to that? Did some house hunting in the Manassas area a couple of weeks ago.

Good to know you are still in the States.

I am not going to Labor day at NCM, Got Carlisle the week before and wife only lets me out a few days a year

Check Southeast Events, we have been having a good time and have a few more things in the works

I had the same problem and it was a simple fan relay located in front of the passenger side wheel well.

Sorry, I meant the Blower relay. It is noted on the schematic. Simple solution and it worked for me.

My system does the same thing, I tapped on the Fan control and the fan's kicked on in all speeds. Loose conector was the problem
