I was wondering if someone could tell me a little about what type of transmission I may have in my 90 vette. It is an automatic and as I said before, I am new to this so I dont know if there are various types that could have been in this year model.
Any help is appreciated!

LOL, you are the proud/lucky owner of the venerable 700R4 (The R stands for rebuild alot)
JK, it's not a bad tranny my girl's got 142k on hers and it started going bad about a week ago.. Pretty plentiful tranny, make sure if you blow it you get it rebuilt right. These trannies are comon in 3rd gen Fbodys (Camaro/Firebird) but for some reason they're not as tough in the F-cars...
Other than that not bad, if you're planning on adding a bunch of HP consider a performance rebuild (ask around not too pricey) or (and this is speculation) I think someone around here has crammed in a 4L80E (new chevy truck tranny (auto) BAD *** but pricey.

90Vert.. Welcome to the forum.. There are many great, helpful people here. I have a 90 vert as well but I have the ZF6 speed. The others are right you have the 700r4. I believe it should handle a fair amount of hp upgrades and punishment if Im not mistaken.. By the way what prompted your question?? Not a breakdown I hope.

Welcome to the Forum! This is you one stop
for all vette info.
Your car has a 700R4 tranny and should take some power if you treat it right. My ZZ4 put down 370tq at the wheels and 350hp at the motor and tranny held up no sweat.

Thanks a lot guys! I just purchased this black beauty the other day and I was just thinking of what I wanted to do with it. The reason behind my asking about the tranny is that it needs a fluid change, so I thought it probably needs a filter so I wanted to know what type it was before dealing with the sometimes idiotic parts store. I was also wondering if these need to be "beefed" up a little before any mods, and if there is anything I can do to it to make it perform better. I was looking in jegs recently and noticed that I could possibly put in a shift kit, but I didnt know which one to get, or if I should even get one at all?

I have a 92 Automatic and it has the 700R. I have 124k on the clock and she is still running strong. I'm a new Vette owner as well and I assure you - I baby has been pushed and pushed some more - with no problems.
Don't forget the "wave"!!
