Not exactly sure what you are doing, but (and you probably know this) if the O2 is too far from the heads it will run too cold. It wants to be hot! Otherwise you may find you will need heated O2 sensors which I believe rquire three wires
I have found a "screw together" ceramic wire splice device (can't remember where i found it) that doesn't seem to affect volts, amps or resistance. I have used it to splice in new EGR valves etc
I have a LT4 in my 64 GS and need to extend the connection so the O2 sensor can be installed in the collector which exits under the frame. Does that help? Is the O2 sensor in the 96 heated, I have not looked at it in a while?

TPIS sells them. I got a pair with the headers for my 94, and they sell them separately.
94 and up are 4 wire heated O2s. You get an extra one to check the Cat function for OBDII, I only need two on my 94.
