Just follow along. You'll be fine. http://www.pnwzr1.net/LT5_tear_down.htm

Just make sure you drain enough coolant.

Added part two since you are looking for the starter.

I recommend removing the throttle cables from the TB. It's sort of a PITA for the first time, but once you do it, its easy after that, and then your able to pull the plenum totally off the car and set it aside so you can work more easily.

Its the starter I'm going for, I guess I'll be able to see it with the plenum off and that should be pretty straight forward?

Nope...

You can't see the starter from there. Coil packs and such are in the way. You got to keep digging deeper

....and replace ALL the gaskets while you're down in there (including the one under the crankcase vent block).

Don't be intimidated...just take your time and pay attention to detail. It really is a piece of cake. I had a day or so of good solid cleaning underneath my plenum...but it was off for a while when I had it ported and polished. Don't be afraid to call or e-mail any of us if you get stuck. we're always glad to help out.

thanks guys, I really appreciate it. It sure is intimidating looking. What would be a good source for gaskets, do they come in a kit? By the way, how much difference did the port and polish make? Was it worth it?

Port/polish on the injectors/plenum can get you close to 400 rwhp. I'd say it is easily the best bang for the buck on the ZR-1. Get the gaskets from Kurt White.

With headers. You're not getting there with out them.

If you have the service books it will help immensely as you need to torque the bolts in sequence etc and different torque specs....having just completed mine but a few hours ago it was valuable for an amateur LT5 guy like me!

I have all the manuals, I read them and weep but I'm going to start on it this weekend and just take my time. No rush here, It'll be a good learning experience for me and I'm looking forward to having it on the road again. Who ports and polishs and what is the going rate?

I had my porting and polishing done by Corey Henderson in New Braunfels, TX...i.e. Henderson Performance (210)867-6286. He also has the Stainless Works Headers...that you will need for the LT5 wake up call...Jeffvette (Jeff Flint) on this forum may also have some insight into P&P...Jeffvette also does a great Powdercoating for a VERY reasonable price.

You should find somewhere in all of those links about the plenum pull that you can just drain enough coolant from the black tank with the radiator cap on it...that is the best way to drain enough coolant to remove the plenum...

Ok, finally got it off, took 45min to disassemble thanks to you guys and the photo directions. Thanks a million for the help. Now, the valley is full of oil, old and new. How do I start to identify where the oil is coming from? Is it normal for this much oil to be in the valley(1/2"), it is clean oil mostly. Crankcase breather? What do I do to stop it? I saw in the instructions how to add the drain, is this all thats recommended? Thanks again guys, you're help has been invaluable..

Roy
