well, look at it this way. People pay more than that for mis-stamped nickels and potatoe chips that look like the virgin mary. Point is ..high...yes it is. Most people say we're nuts for spending 25 to 50+k on a 1990 to 1995 model car zr1 or not. There are not many new crate engines out there anymore..period. Parts are hard to find and eventually buildable cores will be gone. 22k might be a bargain in 10 years. Lets not bash prices, we all will want top dollar when we sell, regardless if it is parts or the entire car.

not to be confrontational but I bet you can't locate a late lt5 crate motor now for 7500 I emailed about that one and it was long gone. I have been offered well over 12k for my 95 crate and I wouldn't sell it. I am NOT saying it is worth 23k but they are worth a LOT and continue to rise.

As a side note I read somewhere that GM produced around 16,000 of these motors.

So - more out of cars, than in them. Looks like the ZR-1 widebody is the rarity (of sorts) compared to the engine itself.

They are not really that rare, if you want one and look around they are available.
I bought one brand new from GM a few years ago for 6,500 when they dumped all the holdover warranty motors. They are out there.

Jeff thats a smokin deal on a new crate motor $6,500 converted into Canadian at that time, add in our taxes, our tax on the tax and our standard Gvt. gratuitys...would likely add up to $11,000 Can.

that one on the zr1.net has long since been sold. heck late plenums on ebay (nos) are going for 895. you could EASILY part out a NEW LT1 for more than 6500 or 7500 they came with all accessories.clutch.oe plug wire etc. gordon killebrew told me how many was left over stock but I don't THINK it anything close to 1600 more like a few hundreds hince the dunn heads...if they had 16000 they could have used those...plus...truely new crate engines will still be wrapped in the special non corrosive dry wrap.

When I bought my 90 back in 97 (wow its been 9 years) I was thinking about a spare...there were about 1,000 LT-5s available from GM...they were the 375 hp version and cost was around $15,000 Canadian. There were also 405s available not sure how many but they were available. Keep in mind that alot of the "collectors" bought these motors to go along with the car (like you have done) and these motors are out there in some ones garage waiting for installation one day. I am sure like you say some have also been parted out. There were also a few hundred early 90s that were recalled for replacement motors... about 10-12 months ago I noticed the take outs were all available for purchase. I doubt the General would have only 300 spare motors for 7,000 cars they would have at least half that number as stocked motors especially when they encountered problems with the early ones. There have also been alot of the LT-5s used for kit cars, hot rods and alot of these were brand new engines from stock.
