Default fuel pump

I am going to replace my fuel pumps as a preventive measure this winter. I went to my local Auto Value parts store with the part numbers for the Master and Niehoff Suburban pumps that have been listed as direct replacements for our cars. They ran the numbers and they both cross to Carter p74037. Has anyone used this pump? Are the connections the same. Also, do our cars use the same pump for primary and secondary's Any help is appreciated..

Thanks

This is worth mentioning...BE CAREFUL (Go VERY slowly) WHEN REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE SENDING UNIT (with pumps attached)...IT WILL BEND VERY EASILY AND YOUR FUEL GUAGE WILL BE INCORRECT IF IT GETS BENT (Don't ask me how I know)

Looks like the Carter P74188 pump crosses as well. According to Carter you should replace the wiring harness...which they also sell. Replace the harness because the connector is different? Don't know if that's their reasoning. Here's the quote from the Net Registry website on fuel pump replacement...

http://zr1netregistry.com/fuelpump.htm

"Fuel Pump part numbers:

GM Part #25163473 ($72) *Fits '96 Suburban with 454 Engine

Airtex - E3904 ($69) (800 424 7839)

Master- E3265 ($69)

Neihoff - P36 (it also has BWD P36 on it) ($65)

I would recommend the Master brand over the Airtex but if you can get the Neihoff do that. It's internal parts are all metal. The Airtex one failed on me a month after putting it in. It also has a wiring harness change over you have to do. The Master and Neihoff are a drop in replacements.

As per Scott Fabre

Also note you can buy fuel pumps at most auto parts store like Autozone which sells them for $50-$65. The part number is 3904 however the 3904 has a different electrical connector than the original pump. You can use the 3265 which is the replacement for the LT1 engine, but it has the same connector as the original LT5 pump. They also have the sock filters as well. They are made by Airtex. Airtex supplies them for GM and GM stamps their own delco logo and part number on them. You can also use 3270 part number as well."

My primary pump went down this past summer and I replaced it with a Carter. It has worked fine ever since.

It sounds like the plug on the Carter pump is the same as our cars. I wonder why Carter recommends the harness change.

Ya'all are talking about two different Carter pump part #'s! The OP mentions P74037 and "GD" mentions P74188. One mentions needing a harness the other makes NO mention.

Someone need to do their homework a bit better. There are maybe hundreds of pumps that are identical in appearance but they don't have the same specs. Use the AC/Delco part # for the suburban application and ask for a change from that # only! GM 25163473 or AC/Delco EP381or just spring for the AC/Delco product!

The OP's part # is "for sure" incorrect I'd guess. It changes to AC/Delco product that fits various 3.1/4.3/2.3 etc GM vhicles and a 5.7 Corvette '89/90 L98. I'm quite comfortable with the fact it's for sure incorrect.
The only reference to the P74188 is at Rockauto but on THEIR site says it's a match BUT no where else that I can find information that substantiates that! The P74188 doesn't seem to have a direct change to any AC/Delco product currently marketed. I doubt I'd be a gambler based on appearance.

A carter P74074 changes to an AC/Delco EP381 and also a EP242 that was used with the GN Buicks and the 3800 Trans Am. It's a likely candidate if your looking for Carter. It mentions a harness!

I take that back I found some references to the P74188 but nothing that could be confirmed through interchanges with a domestic of any brand! Maybe it's the "real deal"!!!!! The application is only found on the Federal-Mogul Catalog. But I doubt I'd be buying! Confusing for sure!

Thanks for the input! I think that I will order the parts from the general in the morning. To much confusion for me with the other brands.

I didn't mean to confuse you but using the Carter Equipment buyers guide the P74037 pump that you asked about has 213 applications from 2.8/3.1/4.3/5.7 and even 2.5 4cyl. I had never seen that number posted before and I just did some quick checks and I hoped it helped.

Try an AC/Delco "jobber" for your pump. Something less than $90 should be considered a "good" price $105 or so pretty good "wholesale"!

The P74188 pump the way I determined the catalog looks like it should be a direct fit(according to Carter), not requiring a harness and says it has a total of 12 vehicle applications but doesn't list them. That pump maybe deserves some investigation.
