Default Regular Mobil1 or extended life Mobil1

I have a 94 ZR1 that I change the oil in my car before I store it for the winter. And would like to know if its worth using the extended life Mobil1 or the regular Mobil1?

I'd look at Mobil 1 High Mileage, as it is an "SL" rated oil, and does not meet the "SM" spec.

The issue is the lower level of phosphorus in SM (.08%). The LT5 was designed for SG & SH which has a level of .12%. SL may work since it is at .10%.

The concern is that the flat valve lifters, cams, timing chains and sprockets in the LT5 needs the phosphorus levels found in the older designed oils.

Marc Haibeck has written an article in the Oct 07 issue of the ZR-1 Net Registry about this topic. Its very interesting reading.

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil is worth the extra $. It has 50% more SuperSyn (Mobil 1 patented super slippery synthetic stuff) than the standard Mobil 1. Definitely worth a few bucks more.

I wouldn't use a newer "SM" rated oil. Lots of people used "SL" rated oils for the last several years without problem, and probably without even knowing or caring about the API rating. As far as what brand or whatever, these motors came from the factory (or at least most of 'em) with dino oil. So I think trying to say what brand or whatever is "best" is a personal opinion. If you are overly concerned, get an oil that has more ZDDP than the "SL" rating allows, though these are mostly "boutique" oils (redline, amsoil, etc). Otherwise, personally, I don't see how you can go too wrong with an "SL" rated Mobil 1 (the High Mileage flavor) as many of us used regular old Mobil 1 "SL" rated oil for the past few years without thinking twice.

I add STP or another additive that has the Zinc in it to bring it back to what it was born with

Is Mobil oil filter number M1 207 the correct oil filter for a 1994 ZR1?

I have seen the results of STP. In winter temps, STP gets extremely thick and will not go through the oil pick up or the oil passages. Result, engine failure.

Yup.

The Bosch 3401 is also a good oil filter for the LT5.

The Extended Life Mobil 1 has a much higher anti-wear and detergent additive package than the base Mobil 1 and is arguably the better oil. That said, if I had a ZR-1 that was out of warranty and I was a Mobil 1 user, I'd use the high mileage Mobil 1 which doesn't comply with the newer, more stringent API SM standards.

I'm also interested in additives that could replace the "missing zink" GM oil supplement, or others. need a bit of guidance on how much to use and where to best buy it.

not as good as the oil that already has it in there, but better than not having it. I went the extended mobil 1 and paid 28 for 5 qts, the regular mobil one was about 22 so I was tempted.

the royal purple stuff looks pretty tempting too. the write ups on it look good but I didn't take the plunge.

I may try it down the road and like to hear feedback on the amsoil and royal purple oils as they look to be better than mobil 1, just alot more pricey and hard to get!!

AMSOIL can be easily shipped to your door, which in my book is even easier to get than going to your favorite local place to buy Mobil 1.

For what its worth, AMSOIL makes several good oils with high levels of zinc and phosphorus that don't comply with the new API SM standards. Each of these has about 1265 ppm phosphorus and 1375 ppm zinc:
AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5w30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
AMSOIL SAE Synthetic High Performance 10w40
AMSOIL SAE Synthetic High Performance 20w50
AMSOIL Series 2000 20w50

I'm dropping you pricing info on these in a PM as AMSOIL Corporate Policy prohibits my posting them online.

I'm in no way encouraging use of this oil, but I just received a press release on this product and it seems interesting...

http://www.joegibbshotrodoil.com/

Anyone have insight on this product? Sure sounds good on paper, but then again anything can sound good on paper...
