Excellent effort Team! Soooooo close. Strange to think of it this way, but at 227mph, you were only walking speed from the record. There's a lot to be said for your attempt, everything held together, no accidents and no one injured and you had one heck of an experience.

Man! All you need Dave is another 50hp and you'll nail that record. Third times a charm I bet.

Dave are you considering going back in September and running with the USFTA?

The air is a tad better.

Default Just found the thread again

Dave,
I posted back and forth with you near the beginning of this project. Let first say congrats on what you have accomplished so far. The car looks great and your speeds are amazing. Having done a top speed quest myself, I have a feeling for what it takes to go fast. Job well done.

Thanks Jeff, as you have experienced, the wall of air at over 200 mph, is a unforgiving force to be delt with. I believe that when we reengineer the exhaust system to exit infront of the doors, and can lower the rear of the car an additional 3/4 of an inch we will have the areo we need to achieve > 230 mph. I have always envisioned the car to be lower than it currently is, there are just a whole lot of issues in getting the car this low.

There maybe a few more ponies to pull from the Lt5, but I think we have effectively reached the limit of this naturally aspirated motor.

PS,
the whole project would not have been achievable without the hard work of Corey Henderson and Rick Harden.

Nice work guys! 227 is a very good accomplishment when working within the constraints of the Class.

I was there with a friend who was running a AH Sprite based car. The record was 161 with a <2tr motor. He set a new class record at 179 and broke the motor trying to qualify for the 5 mile course.
The biggest lesson he learned was in a wind tunnel. He found that the car was too low! and ended up rasing it up 1 1/2 inches and removing all the air foils he thought would help the car. This resulted in an 80hp gain in areo hp.

You can guess all you want about what will make a difference but until you actually use a wind tunnel maybe all you are doing is making it worse.

Tyler, Wind tunnel data is very valuable indeed. As to our effort not a whole lot of guessing as I have studied a lot of wind tunnel data on the C-4, as well as Studying the current and past record holders. When your stuck with a stock body, there is very little you can do to change a car that was never intended to go 230 mph. Once you modifiy as your friend did, there are lots of gains to be made in the wind tunnel as you can actually fix the problems, you created with the original mods

The main component of is and always will be frontal area. This is the hole you make when you drive a car thru a sheet of paper. The higher the car, the larger the hole or frontal area.

Our issue is rake as I now have the front at the right height , but I still have the butt too high. So our rake is too great. By dropping the rear, the angle on the windshield will decrease Plus the roof line will drop decreasing the frontal area.

Our exhaust design was limiting us from lowering the rear anymore.

why not run the exhaust out the factory location? Couldn't that help you get lower?

Not a bad option, but fairly restrictive as the tunnel will not allow for much over an ovaled out 3.5 in OD. And with the drive shaft, and half shaft hoops, things get more complicated.

The answer is to cut the header in front of the collectors, and then Turn each tube out the side infront of the door. There is plenty of room to do this with the tubes lined up in a row , just under the frame rail.

The Bell housing will then be the lowest part of the car, so I will have to trim about 3/4 of an inch off the bottom. and walla. We should have the right set up.

Dave, it was great meeting you and Rick on the salt. Hope you reach your goal and set a new record!

As my wife, son and I were walking to the starting line, Dave was just leaving on one of his runs. I couldn't see the car but the unmistakeable sound of the Z could be heard. Sure sounded great!!!

When is your next run?

Good Luck

CJ
