As the salt is only about 10-15 % of the traction of asphalt, I think I would drop a 1000 # of lead, and only need 2 miles to hit 230. problem is there is no safety without a the large wide area only the salt flats can bring.

Not sure if it is that much as the elevation is 4400 feet with temps around 100 F. But I would be happy with a 30 hp increase at the tough part of the run.

Thank you for the bit of information about the salt. I was out there clowning around on a sport bike back in the mid eighties and was surprised at how sensitive the salt is when torque was applied.

“It got a little squirrely,” Thompson said. “I was almost lock to lock at around 430 mph, which was quite an experience.”That may be the understatement of the year. If you’ve ever had a wheel wobble on the highway driving on the snow, you might begin to guess what Thompson’s run over the Bonneville Salt Flats was like. In a video he posted on his website, you can see him go almost lock to lock at almost full speed to keep the car in line. It’s amazing to imagine

Went out there this past weekend and was thrilled to see Dave out there and his team. SUPER nice guy, I love what he's doing and the vibe from his pit area was great.
Here are a couple pics, but hopefully he tells us more about his experience this year.....
This is my wife's car that I drove out there. I was walking back toward it and thought it looked really cool, the color contrasted agains the very white back ground....

Made 7 runs trying different tires hoods and adding rake. None of which was as fast as how we have been running which is no rake slammed low. We were over temping at the end of each run and down on power with a weak head gasket ( combustion gases in the cooling system. Pulled the motor and took it to Corey and waiting to hear results of the tear down.
Tom thanks for stopping by it’s nice to have the support of this group.

Dave is pic # 27 ... lots of eye candy ... David Hlebichuk's 1990 Corvette went 227.482 mph.

Great thread! With the rules for the class you are running in not allowing for aero mods to the body except for the hood; could a person start with a Callaway car that was an actual factory option (B2K) or does this land outside the rules? From reading the thread I know you are wanting to do this in a ZR-1 with it's LT5.

...and was wondering the same thing. You're making close to the same HP, IIRC....but coming up ~27mph short of the Sledgehammer. I'm not saying that you should be going 254....I'm wondering if the Callaway aero body would get you where you want to be, w/no other changes?

The Sledgehammer initially *only* went around 230 (maybe in the high 220s) when testing at TRC 'off the street.' Only after Callaway taped up the front end (not allowed in Dave's class) and, if memory serves (been a long time since I read that article ), concocted some sort of 'scoops' to bring more air into the engine, did the car ultimately hit 254.76. I'm sure one could find that article online somewhere for more specifics, but it didn't come up for me in a quick Google search

You could run this option in the blown grand touring class current record holder is
the sundowner supercharged 1969 corvette at 248mph

I am running in the naturally aspirated class production body.

Heading back to the Salt tomorrow, world of speed is September 14-17. Headgasket repaired salt report looks good I have high hopes of getting in the 230’s. Corey did a great job with a quick 2 day turn around on the Head rework, all I had to do was remove the exhaust ( dang there’s a lot of header bolts!), tranny, cross member, bell housing, intake manifold, two miles of electric harness and pull the motor
Added a ice water spray system for the radiator to help with the cooling.

This is a 1gal min rate should be a nice cold mist at 200 mph. It’s hard to build hp without heat, combine that with a 5 mile dyno pull and you start to get the picture. Top that off with trying to restrict the air flow under the hood. One of the things that sledgehammer did was reduce the flow with fine screen, not allowed in my class.
