Default Chromed '90 ZR1 wheels

I've been looking at a set of wheels on CL that have been chromed. It looks like the chrome is starting to flake. I've dug around for an answer, but it looks like there's really no way to strip the chrome off the aluminum without destroying the wheel underneath. Am I wrong? I'd really like to get the wheels, but not if they're just going to end up flaking junk.

The chrome can be stripped and re-chromed but your looking at alot of cash.

Don't want to re-chrome them. Maybe just polish or powdercoat. But it does sound like they'd be an expensive project.

How cheap were they? Because you can buy decentish shape '90 Z wheels all day long for fairly cheap. Pretty much anyone with a 1990 ZR-1 has a set they aren't going to ever use.

Where are you located?

I'm located in Washington state, north of Seattle. Here's the wheels. If anyone does have a set of '90 ZR1 wheels to part with, I'm interested. Thanks.

The tires if as good as he says are worth at least $350-$400. so the rims cost is $200-$250.
My '90 original dealer invoice/sales recpt shows an additional charge of $895 for chrome plated factory wheels...that's dealer charge when most all ZR-1s were sold at several hundred dollars over MSPR so you've got to believe chrome plating of yours again should cost less than $895 especially if all 4 wheels need plating with current current market conditions??? (Mine are in excellent condition, but it has been in temp controlled storage since 1991, mi = 14700)...Hi neighbor, I'm on Whidbey Island
Good Luck

Thanks for the tip. If you noticed my avatar, these wouldn't be going on a ZR1, but either a Syclone or Typhoon. I'd be interested in meeting, once my ship gets back up from San Diego (navy).

I disagree, the 90 rims were probably one of the best C4 rims made.

I like the 90 wheels. I would suggest only picking those up if your plaining on re-chroming them, which you said you did not want to do.

I like the '90 wheels too. But there are definitely tons of sets of decent shape '90 wheels out there not being used.

To the OP, if you aren't going to use those tires, you could probably get a set of wheels that don't need chrome stripped off for less than that. The fronts are just regular 1990 wheels, so you can find those for cheap all over the place. I'd think you could land a set of rears for <$300 if you keep an eye out? You might also call these guys: http://pnwzr1.com/ See if they have any laying around.

I don't know anything about stripping chrome, but it sure seems like it would be difficult.

Try Wheels America they do good work, its about a $125.00 per wheel to bring back to new looking, or they will chrome them.

Me too, '90 wheels look good. I'm planning on polishing the ones on my '90 ZR-1. They don't have any clear coat on them.

The only problem with a wheel thats been chromed, polished is it takes away the sharp definition in the wheel.I will agree here the 90 wheel is one of the best looking wheels.Would love to see a 90 Z lowered with the stock wheels.

I can get both front rims for $100.00. You typically won't get the rears for under $400.

Yeah, fronts come and go, but the rear wheels are a pain to find. I really wish someone hadn't plated the wheels, because the price is just about too good to pass up.

I suspect if you put a price out there you were offering for rears, you'd get a few takers.

I'm actually working on another deal for a set of '93s. I like that style (had a set of non-ZR1 before), and can't beat this price. Just working out shipping now.
