Default 1990 corvette questions.

What is the fuel mileage of a L98 vs a ZR-1 motor? For the ZR-1 what can you tell me on full and half power.

The ZR-1 as the only Corvette made at the time that did not have to pay the gas guzzers tax that the Federal government mandated for all cars that did not meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy or CAFE requirements.

In short the ZR-1 was more fuel efficent than a L-98. I routinely get between 26-28 MPG on the highway

I averaged 27.1 mpg round trip to Ohio and back from Missouri. Pleasantly suprised. It didn't seem to matter whether it was on full power of half

My ZR-1 gets between 26 and 28 - almost identical to my former 95 LT1/M6 car. Sorry...No data w/ the L98 cars go, far as fuel mileage goes.

As for the power switch, with the power key off, the LT5 makes about 220 net hp, give or take. Therefore, the ZR-1's acceleration is similar to an L98 car, until the switch is thrown. With the power switch on, suddenly there is nearly double the air and fuel available...And, the LT5 knows just what do do with the extra A/F and it screams like an entirely different animal!

In all honesty, and taking nothing away from the L98 cars, there is NO apples to apples comparision between the L98 and LT5 cars. Drive one of each and see if I'm lyin'!!

Geez...I wasn't able to get more than 24-25 when running through Nevada, Oregon, and Norcal. Isn't 95-105 the most efficient speed for the LT5?

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about all this because Im looking into ether modding out the L98 I got or do a 383 build and turn it into a ZR-1. In which Im nearly there now. My 1990 is fully loaded everything but a sexy LT5.

Both motors achieved the same EPA fuel economy numbers. Real-world fuel economy is highly variable based on driving style, but they should be pretty similar for both cars driven in the same way (though obviously at full throttle the LT5 can burn more fuel than the L98 because it is consuming more air/making more power).

As to full power vs normal/half, here is my car on the dyno key on vs off:

How does the LT5's fuel economy play into this decision??

Must be the wider body air velocity coefficient ratio as it relates to a non coconut laden "non Sexy" LT5 engine

I dont know Bob as most 383 owners are concerned about fuel economy these days. Why do I feel like im on an episode of punked ?

Do the 383 small block. You could probably even do a 454 small block cheaper than what it will take to put an LT5 in a standard C4.

Not sure you know what you're getting into...

Once you start modding and adding cubic inches focus on power your milage is going to be whatever its going to be. With a good tune it will still be decent.

Your car will never be a ZR1 clone different body and many other things. You want a Z go buy one otherwise mod the sbc they can both run hard.

USed to get 16/24 avg with 4.09 gears. Could have squeezed more driving like a little old lady but who wants to do that.

simple, It play into the fact on how I drive. With my L98 I just ride alone and go with the speed limit. But, I do plain on road trips. With the info I got if I place a LT5 in my vette I need to know if Ill waste more gas at full power then at half power.

If at full power it ate more gas then I would look at getting a LT1 or a LT4. Im sure I would settle with the LT1. I don't own a vette to race or show off. I own one because it a great car to drive and relax in.

I saw a post in here that someone said I did not know what I was getting myself into. If you think that then speak up. You can just give me tips or tell me of an easier way to go about doing something.

The cost of gas youll never notice.

Seriously if youre worried about 50cents worth of gas+= when taking the car out you shouldnt be driving one period.

Performance cars use gas. Modded cars use more gas. Non performance cars use less gas than either. When its empty you add more. Whats it gonna be.

Maybe Im old school but any built 8 out there that gets in the teens is good by me.

Sorry ( no offense to the op) but it KILLS me when guys talk about these dream builds then start worrying about mileage. WHAT?!

I know what you mean. Im not that worried about gas. Im trying to see which is better and where I can set a goal to get to or stay near.

My ZR1 got 26.5 mph at 90+, mine meets my definition of an economy car, noticeably better mileage than my L98 also with about double the power and fun.

You would be $s ahead if sell your L98 and just buy a ZR-1.
One of the reasons the LT5 gets good MPG when driving is it has 3 throttle plates the center one is only about 28mm, this is the one it runs on until you get on it than the other 2 open I think they are around 58mm.

The LT5 doesn't use more fuel in full or normal mode at part throttle cruising. Even in full power mode, with light throttle application, the secondaries remain closed and fuel economy is excellent. Also, when the displacement is increased, fuel economy doesn't suffer much. For example - my 415 cid motor with big valves, stage III cams and max porting with a 3.73 rear still manages 26 mpg on the drive down to BG at an average of 65-70 mph. A stock motor with stock rear end might give 30 mpg in the same scenario. Compare this to a 421 small block chevy in a C4 and you'd be lucky to get 15 mpg.
