Zr-1 windsheild 1990
Stupid question of the day. I have had this car since new 5-20-90 2,085 built 19k. I never questioned what the purpose was of the what looks like gold flaked inside the windshield. Thanks philly joe

It wasn't meant to be. What you are seeing is the delamination of the layers of the windshield. The ZR-1 windshields were given a special shaded coating to reduce heat from entering the interior. Almost every ZR-1 windshield will show varying amounts of delamination (gold coloring). Even the last ZR-1 built with almost no miles and has always been indoors in the Corvette Museum has delamination

But of interest to me is the fact a delam windshield is one way to now it is a correct windshield (although not all have the delam issue...I seen several with none). Many ZR drivers who do not concern themselves with NCRS etc. simply purchase a standard C4 windshield (which does not have the metallic film lamination) and replace thus cost of $300 vs buying an OEM ZR-1 windshield (IF you can find one) or an aftermarket version (some are coming in from a Euro source) for $2100
At a recent Northern Virginia Corvette Club (NCCC sanctioned) concours I was docked 1/2 point for minor delam>>
I told the judges that the delam proved OEM and all ZR-1s have it as a badge of honor... guess I did not impress them and got the 1/2 pt off
Also. you notice the rectangular cut out in the delam...that is for a radar detector since the metallic lamination blocked radar beams.
