Default 1991 Corvette FX3 Shocks

Hi Guys I have recently purchased a C4 and have been working on it to get it in great condition to be a driver. It is a 91 with 24,000 miles 6 speed and has the Fx3 shocks. I know i have to replace the shocks as they were leaking, how do I tell if the actuators need to be rebuilt or if they are fine. Here is a picture of the 1991 and my 2009 together on the evening of picking the 1991 up.

i doubt you would have to replace the shocks with such low miles. some leakage is normal. check the zr1netregistry for more on this.

There is no fluid left. The ride is horrid, the car sat for a while thats why I believe they need replaced.

The FX3 system runs a self test on startup. If there is a test failure you see "SERVICE RIDE CONTROL" in the DIC. Unless somebody pulled the bulb which should light momentarily at ignition on.

It's a lot easier to pull the plug off of the controller (so a lot of people would have taken that route to turn off the lamp). it sits down with the bosch ABS stuff in the cubby behind the driver's seat. I'm sure not all of your actuators are malfunctioning, but the pot metal gear on top of each shock is probably cracked, and if so, will kind of get stuck in the actuator or fall out in pieces when you take it off.

I was considering having mine redone at bilstein since they are only 20 miles away, but I have put it off due to cost. My base coupe is not crying for proper originality like your low mile example.

I talked to the guy who rebuilds the actuators and he helped clarify several things. What my next question is does anyone know where to get the front bilstein shocks I can not find them anywhere. I've called all the corvette part dealers, and several other places but known have the fronts in stock. It looks like I might be out of luck for a few weeks minimum.

The shox shop lists the shocks, $734 for a set.

eshocks, lists them also. Looks like they might be cheaper and sold individually.

Have called everywhere all have them on websites with prices listed, but when I called each and every place none of them had the front shocks in stock. And it would take a while to get them from bilstein germany. Several places have the rears in shock but no parts place have the front shocks.

If your not in a hurry, get them revalved by Bilstein in CA. Much cheaper and you can get the valving custom tuned if wanted.
