Windshield Stories
I would like to hear from you guys about how your windshields are doing. Mine has gotten so bad, I am going to replace it. Has yours gone bad? Did you replace it? What did you do? I have a custom Saint-Gobain windshield I will have installed, but I am always curious what others have done. My insurance will gladly install a generic C4 for me at no cost, but I don't think I'll go that route just yet since I have the custom job sitting in my garage. I just can't believe how bad my windshield has gotten over the last year or so. The laminated pieces are letting loose! Funny thing is, it looks so bad from the outside, yet I can hardly notice it from the inside.

I just picked up 1990 #702. The windshield is so badly delaminated, it will ned replaced. Did 1990 have a worse issue than other years, being the first year used?

It does have the usual issue that old windshields have with the really tiny rock chip marks everywhere, but other than that, it is still really nice.

My 94 has about 1/2" delam all the way around. That said, it has spent the last 4 years out of the weather and sun...... and only driven 4K miles or so in that time.

My 91 is pretty good, but there is kind of a haze toward the top. Absolutely no rock chips at all, but that could change in a hurry. 3 of the last 5 cars I had needed glass after driving them about a year.
I will not lose a wink of sleep if I have to put a generic C4 piece of glass on it. The purple tint looks bad anyhow (even if it does keep the UV out).

1990 ZR1 Windshield Replacement
I have a 1990 number 1122 with 8000 miles on it and have already had the windshield replaced. I don't think with that kind of mileage it has seen much sun light. I think age more than light affected the original windshields.

Just replaced mine. Funny, a few years ago I had a 90 with no delam problems, now have a 93 with 8k miles that had terrible delam.... found a forum member in Maryland that had them reproduced. I think he has a few left. I am very happy with the way it looks. Can't tell any change from the original. I could have went with the clear, but wanted to have that Z style look. If you need his info just PM me.

I recently picked up a 90 B2K Callaway that had the Koolof laminated windshield installed as an option during the conversion. The car has very low miles and probably didn't see day light very much, but the lamination is 100% percent perfect. I just hope it stays that way!

My 90 had sat outside in the same spot for at least a year without moving. I suspect that was the cause of my delam issue with it. Being that it will be a non original motor (NOM) car, I may just opt for a regular windshield.

my 1991 #302 with 189K miles has fairly mild delam, even compared to my previous 1991 #1147 which had 65K miles.
There's a half-inch diameter rock chip on the passenger's side which is a bigger blemish than the delamination in my opinion.

Are we agreed that it's the sun that causes it? I've had my 91' since 94'. It has minor delamination around the edges, nothing really ugly but annoying nonetheless.
My car, (66Kmi.), spends almost all of it's time in an un-airconditioned garage and not in the sun. In the garage it is 90f.+ much of the year here in Florida. Which leads me to believe it's not the heat, but exposure to UV rays that causes the problem.
In my area there is a lot of sand on the roads, and when the wind blows you can imagine what that does to windshields. My '03 suburban (200K+mi.) is so bad that it's overdue for replacement.
When The ZR-1 gets a new windshield I'll probably go for the regular C4 version, as the cost of the ZR-1 version seems prohibitive. And I've read horror stories about trying to order an original, or copy.
Can anyone post experiences of trying to get the insurance company to replace the original? (I'm with Allstate).
In this heat I probably need an original to help the AC do it's job, as it is marginal at best.

We like to call that kind of haze, delamanation. My 91 has the usual, about a 2 inch band across the top and down the sides about 6 inches.I cant tell its gottin any worse, the car is always in the garage and never out in the weather, when I drive it I park it in the shade if at all possible.Miles, age have nothing to do with delamanation when it comes to these cars.Ive heard, read the last 95 in the museum is so bad you cant see through the windshield, might have been replaced. When the time comes to replace mine if there isnt a reasonably priced OEM type replacement out there Ill put a regular windshield in the car.

I don't think the sun has anything to do with it. The windshield guy I had at my place has a theory that they wiped some chemical on the solar insert during the build process that is now causing the pieces to delaminate. I can see why he's saying that, because there are now streaks that almost look like they were caused by the windhield wipers, but are obviously within the windshield. There are light strips all around, but these really weird streaks that look like it was cleaned with a dirty rag all over the center. It is really difficult to get a good picture of just how bad these look because of the reflections. Anyway, I am going to have mine replaced as soon as I can get the right shop to do the work. I'm not ready to have the guy who drives around in a van to your home or work place do the job!
