export zr1 help
hello all
I have a line on a black 1991 zr1 with 29000mi that i am told by the owner was originally exported to europe by gm. it appears to be in very nice shape and drives well and is legal in the us. the main question I have is are there any differences between export cars and domestics. are there any things i should look for or worry about. and is it worth more or less then a U.S. model of equivalent age/condition (of course he says it rare and worth more). thanks

Is it rare and worth more, yes. But this will be a long term maybe and depends on condition / color / year.
Look forward to pictures and more info!

I didnt notice the mirrors but the turn signals look U.S. spec.there is no paperwork that I am aware of to prove the claim and I have no idea where it was supposed to have come from (owner thinks germany). is there anything in the v.i.n. to help me figure this out or maybe I can try G.M. or the nat corvette museum?

black on black .no mods done to it that the current owner is aware of.
non-original wheels (gold knockoff of bbs wheels), only has painted top.
no extra paperwork or other goodies. body is near perfect (light scuffs and stone chips) interior is okay but looks like it will clean up to nice but will never look perfect (creasing in leather no rips general wear and scuffs).
good news it was well maintained under owners care. bad news it was maintained like a general car so none of the original parts were kept.

The first digit in the make code will always be the country of manufacture. There are numerous country codes, but the most common ones are:
* USA: 1, 4 or 5
* Canada: 2
* Mexico: 3
* Japan: J
* Korea: K
* England: S
* Germany: W
* Italy: Z
* Sweden: Y
* Australia: 6
* France: V
* Brazil: 9

The question is where was the vehicle originally titled - was it exported for sale abroad, or was it sold in the USA and then exported and perhaps modified for use in country ?

I've seen an export ZR-1 (German) and the only significant difference I could see was that it had an extra data plate in the engine bay to show German type approval. Some may have euro-spec tail lights, but I can't see any reason why they should be worth more than US-spec cars.

Put your VIN code on this website and you'll see the RPO on this car (even the export RPO codes).

My car was originally exported to Belgium. It has an EXP code listed with all the other RPO codes. I also read that some EU specific radios change frequency by .1, while North American radios change by .2
The analog gauges on an export car may also be in metric.
The original owner of mine ordered his car to be close to US specifications.

Both radios change by .2, North American radios are odd "tenths" (101.1, 101.3, 101.5, 101.7, etc) while European radios are even "tenths" (101.0, 101.2, 101.4, 101.6, etc).
