Default LT5 Refinishing Help

Hello, I know there are a lot of threads on this subject and I believe I have read every one of them. But none of them are recent and I could use some guidance. I have a 1992 quasar blue zr1 that runs and drives excellent. Everything about the car if very representable except for the engine bay. The lt5 is not even grey anymore it is a horrible army green looking color. Obviously I would like to get the motor and engine bay cleaned up to show it off because it is the reason I bought the car in the first place. So my questions are is there any pointers on disassembling and reassembling the plenum and cam covers injector housings etc? And secondly is there any really good recommendations to where I can send these to someone that has experience refinishing and powder coating these pieces? I think I want them close to quasar blue with silver metallic accents. Like I said I did try and do lots of research but I feel like I am missing something and I am definitely new to this so any and all help you give is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

Painting it while in the car is always an effective option and can be done in such a way to minimize disassembly.

Here's a good article from a member, Steve, on the zr1netregistry.com, if you want to do it in the car.

I thought a lot about refinishing it in the car but it is very very tarnished and I think it needs to be stripped to bare metal. Plus I want it blue to match car so im thinking it would come out a lot nicer if removed. I may be wrong. Dynomite I read almost your complete write up on everything. Very very useful and I did thank you. I was hoping for some specifics on what I need to remove and reassemble correctly and once I get pieces off what to watch for or check while I have everything off. And any specialists in the Cleveland Ohio area. And any other good tips! Thanks!

My first ZR-1 was a 92 Aqua.

I re-did the plenum in rattle can but had it stripped first. The cam covers were in good shape so I left them alone. Also, I am not a fan of the
monochromatic look.

I now have a Black Rose 92 and I redid the cam covers and plenum when the motor was out for other modification.
I went w a bit more of a "testarossa" theme.

I redid my 93 in the car, just removed the plenum. Randy has a link in his post.

For me hands down this is the best looking way to go. I think the "stock type" appearance is so clean looking.

I had mine done about 10 years ago, I would go with powder coat instead of paint although Marc Haibec does a real nice job with paint. I went with Sumax in NY they do a lot of high end work .I think it was around $1000 for all the pieces to get powder coated. Be careful removing the torx heads on the cam covers. They can strip out, make sure you are square on them and buy a high quality torx head like snap on.These are a bitch to remove if you strip the torx head out. They can be tight since they bolts are steel and the heads aluminum. Also brake booster has to be removed to get all the torx heads. Shoot me an email if u need help.

Powder Coat or 2 stage paint would both work fine. Paint would give you more color options. A good prep job on either option is the key to a quality finish

I'm thinking of just putting a big piece of Tupperware over mine so it looks more like a modern engine.

NOT!!!!!

I disassembled mine and sent the cam covers and plenum to Marc Haibeck for refinishing. Also gave me the chance to replace the injectors and clean up /replace vacuum lines and secondary actuators.

This is what I am trying to do! I like the look of the big blue beast sitting in the car. Is there anything specific that you have to tell the powder coater to do or not to do. I am going to take it to a local guy but I do not know if anything can get ruined if they don't do it correctly. So what did you tell your guy? Thanks for the help

My personal favorite! Mine is torch red now. If the engine comes out again, it will be Candy Red.

The powder coat guy I used was very careful with plugging small holes and the handling of the cam covers.

You have to be careful taking apart and reassembly the throttle body.
Other than that it was a straight forward job.

You will like the results!
