Not ZR-1 specific, but related as much of the tech talked about was used for LT5...

Thanks 4 the video, Tom.

And, to make your mouth water, the DOHC conversion for the LSx motors...is fascinating!

Very enjoyable video and great info on their manufacturing techniques. I love the (very brief) pictures of the early outboards; recognized a few that I had owned. I spent my teenage years as a part time Mercury Outboard mechanic with a small shop in my family's basement. My mother was not too keen on my using an old dresser of hers for parts storage. But that was not the worst problem--we lived on the water on Long Island Sound and one day big Nor'easter brought a huge wave down the sound and flooded our basement 6 feet deep. Big mess to clean up and pretty much the end of my outboard mechanic career as college beckoned. The good news: while the dresser spent some time under water, I eventually rescued and refinished it and I still have it here in our spare bedroom. But those years created my love for all things Mercury and probably explains my long affair with the LT5--Bob

Not to hijack an interesting thread, but a bit more Lt5 related, about a dozen of us took our ZR-1s up to the Mercury Racing facility in Fon Du Lac in September of 2014 for a picnic, car show and plant tour. We didn't get to go to the main plants, but toured the racing production facility and nearby Mercury Museum (which houses a 1995 ZR-1) and it was all very interesting. Dom, you should organize another one! Here are a couple of pics from that trip--Bob

Awesome pics! I visited the Merc Racing facility in '87? There was tons of eye candy, but the sickest thing (at the time) was a Lamborghini V12 engine, with ss headers, coupled to a racing out drive...all on a stand to see. It looked wicked.

Cool! I had a Merc Mark 55 on a 10' fiberglass speed boat when I was a kid, later I upgraded to a 60's vintage (white) 45 hp, then added "big bore" carbs I got of a 70's vintage 85hp. Little boat would go about 50 mph w/a 2 blade prop. Fun times.
