How many est. C4 ZR-1 left?

The ZR-1 Registry would be the place to ask this. This question was asked at the last C4 Gathering too, and while no official number was given the estimate is below 6,000.

LGAFF at the Registry works in the insurance industry and had a pretty good estimate based on typical attrition.

Probably not so much now but in the early years there were quite a few totaled. The ZR-1 Net Registry for many years kept a list available for members of all the VINs that had been totaled but more recent management has deleted that from member's view. When I had my last-year '95, of which a total of 448 were produced, I always assumed that with attrition there were probably about 400 left in the world. A pretty rare and exclusive car. --Bob

I used Collector Car frequencies, but a lot of factors go into it, how many were stored away, etc. I am seeing about 6-7 per year right now on the major salvage websites.
Probably 500-970 Totals losses to date, many more in the early years I would guess. Collector car insurance deters a lot of use

Typical attrition for the relevant generation of Corvette- which not very many are daily drivers. Do you think ZR-1's 'go out' faster than a regular LT1 model? I do not know the answer to this question and comments are welcome. I also mean from all factors including service life, cost to keep running where it gets to the tipping point of throwing good money after bad, and then of course the likelihood of collision loss.

I can relate to Bob's quote above, as at the last car show (Oct 16th) that I was at, the following kind of left me speechless to some of the spectators...
I had one father and son come by, and the father thanked me three different times for bringing the ZR-1 to the show. I was speechless to say the least, never had anyone thank me like that before!!!
Another person mentioned, that he will probably not see another ZR-1 on the road, and was also very appreciative....
I have to say it appeared that people were "blown away" with the Z.
That is exactly why I chose to keep regular insurance on my 94. I did not like the restrictions of those policies. With my regular insurance coverage, I can go anywhere, anytime, stay overnight or for an extended time with no worries. IMO, these vehicles are to much fun to drive as much as possible, rather then letting them sit and not use.
Hopefully as time moves on, we won't see many more ZR-1's get parted out, but that they will attract new owners who would want to bring them back to life.

On insurance, I echo the idea of doing regular insurance. Only paid about $600 per year but drove it usually 3,000-4,000 miles each year. These cars are meant to be driven!--Bob

I was almost always the only C4 ZR-1 at shows here in northern Illinois. I can think of only one show in the last two years that had another, so we were two. Always had a four page description of ZR-1s and my car on the windshield that many people said they really liked to read. Always won a class trophy when they were being given out.

I keep my mileage under 5000 each year, that way I don't have to get an emissions test. I get the emission exempt sticker every year by doing this, it works for me!!!
BTW, congrats again on your Z06, I know you are enjoying the ride. That is one great machine!!!

Without a doubt; I can confirm that at least one is alive and well.
1993 # 181 is doing just fine!
Still can break the tires loose at 5k rpm in second gear!
Can't help you with the status of the other 6,000 or so.

I hear you there Bob, as far as attendance goes on the ZR-1's, in the last few years with the exception of Carlisle and Corvettes for Chip, they are the only shows that have had a number of ZR-1's that participate. In all of the other 4 or more shows plus the Cars & Coffee shows that I have been at, I was the only ZR-1 in attendance in all of them.

Yup, definitely enjoying the Z06. The ZR-1s are very special and I greatly enjoyed owning them all those years. But I am old enough now that I felt I finally deserved an automatic and a warranty! Driving down to have lunch with Marc H tomorrow as the days are cool but still sunny. (He always wants to drive it to the restaurant and he keeps picking restaurants that are farther and farther away). Claims he only drives stick shift cars and likes the automatic in the Z06.--Bob

I always do. I live about 40 minutes from Marc's shop so we try to get together once every month or two. Gives me a good excuse to drive my car a good distance and I enjoy catching up on the Z's. Also gives Marc a chance to talk about things other than ZR-1s--good therapy. Marc did drive a bit more than usual yesterday to get to lunch. We chalk it up to looking for new and different restaurants. -Bob

That's what it's all about, getting together with friends, a good meal and long drives in your Vette. Tom

At least one other ZR-1 left.
I still have mine - 1995 #444, still with 5 original miles. Marc Haibeck is fairly familiar with the car. I plan to leave it to my one and only child.
