Default Newbie; Need help with my inherited ZR1

Any help is much appreciated.

I inherited a 90 ZR1 with less than 30K miles. My Dad gave it to me several years ago, and he recently passed away. I had it in Atlanta...have had it garaged at my in-laws since moving to Houston...now I'm realizing I can't keep it...just don't have a place for it.

I had it shipped to the local Atlanta corvette place to get serviced and sell and now they are saying it needs a new engine ($12K) and they are not interested in selling or putting on consignment.

I'm not in the position to spend a lot of time getting several opinions or robustly advertising this car. Looking for a reasonable solution.

As I am far away, I have no pictures or details about the engine issues.

Well, you have several things going on at once with the disadvantage of about 800 miles.

My .02 is to get the car to a "regular" Corvette repair shop that is familiar with the LT5 engine and tell you what REALLY is going on.

The Atlanta Consignment shop sounds a bit sketchy as it is quite a leap to pronounce the engine shot. Sure it could be fouled but, but it sounds like they "F'd" it up, don't know what to do and want to blame you (with a bad motor) to get it out of their shop and off their hands.

So, from your comments, I see only two COA (courses of action) 1) get it running properly and advertise it or 2) advertise it as a parts car and take what you get. Photos on the forum will help.

It would be a shame to have the ZR1 fall into hands that don't appreciate it. You are in the right spot on CF. Also try to post on ZR1NET.com

Maybe a forum member from Atlanta with ZR1 knowledge can take a peak at it?

Something smells fishy here.
Tell us more about the car in the shop in Atlanta.
Is the shop:
Buyavette
Linderberg
MCCorvettes
Ron's Restoration
Atlana Corvette Center
Corvette Little
Jim Ellis Chevrolet

What do they say is wrong with the motor?
No start?
Knocks?
Low Oil Pressure
What?

I would venture to say possibly a bad injector, coil which as we all know causes the infamous knock from the cam chains-flywheel and that translates to a rod knock, spun bearing to those unfamiliar with the car.

I'm new to the forum and not sure if it's appropriate to mention the particular shop...but it's at a Corvette specific shop in Atlanta.

Agree. I'm having to rely on the the folks looking at it, which it seems that they are well equipped since they only work on Corvettes as I understand.

I'm familiar with the knock and had these same guys replace the flywheel component (sorry for lack of specific details) a few years ago. They have had this car since February...

"Knocks" is the major complaint, but it may be more complicated than that.

If the engine developes a miss it will start to knock from the flywheel and the cam chains. The injectors in the 90-92 cars fail, not they might the do fail and when an injector dies, the car developes a miss, not running on all cylinders and that's where the knock sound comes in. A bad coil will give He same results. I'd see if there were another owner close by to see if they can help you out diagnosing the problem. If you were closer I'd be happy to take a look but that's not the case here. Wh n the one of the injectors in my 91 died, when I heard the knock that's the first thing I had runnin through my mind even though I knew that wasn't the case.

Get your car out of there, these people are incompetent, at least when it comes to ZR-1's. I experienced the same knock on my previous 90' Z with 40k miles. It turned out to be an injector.

Post this on the other zr1.net/forum/. Seems to me there are members in the Atlanta area that could help you out.

Icmeeks,

There are good people in this section that have your best interests in mind. "We Gone" is one of them.

Don't be taken down the "trail of tears" if you don't have to be. If you need some help, ask for it.

The guys on this forum and the ZR-1.net are all enthusiasts.

It would be very unusual, not impossible, but unusual for an LT-5 motor to be trash at 30k miles.
Take up any members offer to look at your car before proceeding any further.
Good Luck!

lcmeeks,

You realize, that you will get the ZR1 running top notch, you then drive it with reckless abandon, feel the roll-on power of the LT5, fall in love with her and promise to never part with it.

It's happened to all of us.

Funny you say that, after talking to Steve, his passion rubbed off on me already...which leads to my next question since you're a few hours north of me in Texas...if I can get the car here, who should I send it to if I want to get it back to great condition?

Lloyd,

After speaking with about you dads ZR-1, I hope you do keep it, sounded like he had a true love of the ZR-1. Would be a great memory every time you drive it.

Look forward to checking things out for you.

Steve
