Default Injector Woes

engine almost quits when the secondaries open; sounds like injector time..... Recommended source/ brand/ part number? Also, should I replace the primaries while I am at it? Primaries work fine, but hey, they all went to the same party.

There are multiple factors the ecm takes into consideration when it thi ks about firing on all 16 injectors. If the ecm thinks something is wrong, it will not let the engine get above 3400 or so. It cuts fuel/spark and the engine feels crippled.
A few things to look for: bad vacuum actuators, vacuum leeks and there is a sensor called a pressure differential sensor that can go bad too.
what year is yours?

To answer your question, I installed Accel 150821s from Summit Racing over 5 seasons ago and 15k miles..NO issues at all since!

However, as mentioned there are a host of issues that can cause the motor to fall flat besides injectors. Can't say it enough: It's always better to investigate and determine exactly what is failing rather than throwing parts needlessly at it until the problem goes away...maybe goes away!

For examples (from personal experience over the years):

  • IF the accordion "snorkel" hose between the air filter box and the TB is collapsing, the result will be similar to the one you describe.
  • IF the secondary fuel pump is kaput...
  • IF the fuel filter is in need of replacement...
  • IF there is an issue with the secondary vacuum circuit (under the plenum)

And, frankly your symptoms are pretty far removed from the usual indication of failing injectors - NOT to say you don't maybe have that issue as well, e.g., but the collapsing hose would be at the top of my list. But, check first and replace if bad...not just replace this or that because in might be the problem.

No guessing. Need to investigate!

The car is a 1990 with about 78K on it. The dealer says there is pressure to the injectors and the vacuum controls/butterflys work fine. The car had set for many years (in a garage)

The car is a 1990. It has been sitting for maybe 10 years. The plugs and wires have been replaced, as has the primary and secondary fuel pumps and the filter, line and tank cleaned. It work perfectly on the primaries, even passed smog with flying colors. Dealer says it is one or more clogged injectors (they are the originals), given their diagnostics - good fuel pressure vacuum and lines - it was tested on the road with their diagnostics.

for sure replace all 16 injectors. the early ones fail with the alchy content in the fuel, it's not IF it's when.

I also used Accel injectors, bought from Summit Racing.

The engine stumbles when high power is requested - acts like one or more injectors. The secondary throttle plates are working, the secondary pump is new, pressures goo, and the injectors are getting the pulse signals - SO, I am thinking the (ACCELL) injectors. Note; runs perfectly on primaries, passed smog with flying colors.

Thanks so much for the information and guidance
