Default Structural Rigidity - Is there a solution?

Gentlemen,

I really want a c4 zr1 but the only issue is the structural integrity of the car isn’t top notch. What do you guys use in regards to aftermarket support that will overcome this issue or at least improve upon?

Thanks,
-Ray

Depends on what you are looking for. Keep the top on and rigidity is fine. Take it off and not so much. They make an aftermarket bolt in "T" that many use to help when top is off.

Does your targa top fit over the bar with no issue?

Not sure what you are asking Bill- cant use both of these at the same time! when the truss bar is on- the targa top fits inside the hatch You were kidding right?

Isn't there a frame stiffener "x" brace that comes off the 'verts?

This is what Jeff is referring to... I don’t have one but reports are very good about it’s functionality.

I also use the truss bar pnewt posted when or if I have the top off works great. I use it as I have 3 C4's and was the best price choice it fits all of them and I only need one

Ray,
Any suggested solution as a response to this question would lend credence to the myth of "lack of torsional rigidity in a C-4".

I have owned C-4 ZR-1's continuously since 1992.
I have never shattered or cracked a windshield coming off of the line at the drag strip like I have in other cars.
I have never ended up in the weeds at an auto cross event due to a flexing condition.
I have not "tracked" the car, but I will admit to driving it at insane speeds both on straightaways and through many a twisty curve and ramp, and all four corners remain firmly planted right up to the breakaway threshold.

I have on occasion driven my car onto the boardwalk at multiple beach locations for shows and parades at obviously very low speed.
With the top on; No issues.
With the top off, some mild motion as each tire finds a new level with each board.

So do not drive it over 150 on the boardwalk and you should not experience a problem of any significance.

One only needs to look at a wrecked one to see how well they hold up under the most adverse circumstances.
Those high and thick sill rails do a great job for most all conditions with the top on.
The various optional enhancements, just like for many other cars, are available if you really want more.
However, you needn't hold back getting one and driving it aggressively, due to any such concerns.
They are great cars, and they do play very well!
Good luck with your search!

Marty

Marty...do you belong to Boardwalk Corvette club of A/C? I did from 93-98 when I moved to FL. Was fun driving on the boardwalk.

I belong to Lakes Corvette Club.
However, I have been going to the Boardwalk Corvette Club's show in OCNJ since 92 or 93, which is when it used to be in the parking lot before moving up onto the boardwalk.
Certainly one of the most memorable times that one can have, which is why I return most every year.
Have also done the OC Maryland event where you drive for what seems like miles on their boardwalk. Again, something you really enjoy!
Both events are not to be missed!!!

I never found the structural rigidity to be an issue in day to day driving. What will you be doing with the car to make rigidity a weak spot?

Personally, I think the "Rigidity Issue" to be one of personal perception.

I've driven my Z very spiritidly with the top in and the top out.

Makes no difference to me.

I agree....hence my 1st post. Drive my 1980 vette and then my 90 zr1 and it is day and night. Take them both on a course and my 80 is not much slower....383 stroker etc but will hang in the twisties.

As I told the OP in his other thread, he needs to drive a C4 to see for himself. The C4 frame was good for it's time, and is plenty strong (not the same as rigid). Most people will think it's "fine"...because it is.

Anyone using the V2V frame stiffner also have Quickjacks? Raising the question because I am wondering if the frame stiffner interferes w the use of QJacks under the frame rails?

i have this product, works well and you barely see it, also no mods to the frame, tight fit around brake lines. think i had to drill 1 hole.
