If not, why not?

why wider body if no more room?

dont say tires bc 96 grandsport came out and had same size rear tires as zr1.

Nope, same interior as a base car. Wider body panels to cover tires and as you know the Grand Sport has the tacky flairs to cover the tires.

Its wider only because of the tires.

like he said the grandsport came with double sided stickey taped on flares.

Funny thing is, you can fit 17x11 wheels with 315s under the stock C4 rear without needing either the ZR-1 fenders or the stick on GS pieces. Did this on my 92 base car years ago and the wheels lined up perfect with the outer fender.

same here. Did this on my 93 vert with 96 grandsport wheels/315ís. No flares (though id like to do euro flares).

So im wondering if GM did the wide body for looks or some other reason? (Aerodynamics - its well known the zr1 has a great top end !)

The offset for the rear ZR-1 Wheel is 36mm and the offset for Grand Sport wheels is 50mm.

I know most people say they did it to fit the 315s. Whatever the reason, I am sure glad they did it The best looking rear end on any Corvette, IMO.

Two books I would recommend for anyone interested in the design and development of the C4 Corvette and ZR1 are Corvette From the Inside, by Dave McLellan and The Heart of the Beast, by Anthony Young.
