When I did mine I took it all apart, fixed everything that needed attention and redid everything in blue to match my quasar blue Zr1. I was 20 years old when I did this and I think it turned out very well. I learned a lot from helpful people on this forum and wouldn't have been able to do it without them. If you have any specific questions I will be more than willing to help as much as I can.
