Sometimes wonder if lots of these older LT5 cams have too much duration/overported parts and can make more with less.

Exactly Ron. I seem to recall someone mentioning the stock exhaust ports at being 95% efficiency as compared to SBC of ~ 70% which is supposed to be good.
W 2 smaller intake valves, u have less inertia and less need for monster lift and duration as we see in the LS motors innorder to make the same power. Take andtock LT5, port the top end and port match heads, add headers and exhaust. With tuning ur at 400 to the wheels while idle is ~ 800rpm. To me its one of the ultimate DIY motors readily available.
