Well I've been having clutch problems lately, the trans would not go into
gear at a stop sometimes. I wasn't sure what to expect, the service manual
said bad throwout bearing or disk stuck on splines. Ripped everything out
and found the dual mass flywheel is leaking grease. The whole front of the
clutch disc is coated and gummed up to the point that it was stuck to the
flywheel. It's a shame because the flywheel surface is very nice.

Anyway, I'm gonna go for the DRM flywheel. I found out this is apparently
an undrilled stock GM F-body flywheel that DRM machines to our specs- V6 or
LT-1, I'm not sure. I heard that some people convert to a sprung hub disc
when they do this. What sprung hub disc are they buying (what is the
original application)? Has anyone compared the two (original vs. sprung
hub) to know if there is a difference?

It appears I should change the trans oil to RL Lightweight Shockproof. Has
anyone had any durability problems with this?

thanks,

Chris

Chris,
Have you thought about a aluminum flywheel. Lets your engine wrap up quicker. The one real drawback is it will make your already noisey transmission more so. Fadanza makes a very nice one.

Well, like I said I wanna go for the DRM single mass steel- 20 lb, which should make a big difference anyway. For the 50% higher cost I doubt the 7 lb reduction is worth it to me. On an all out performance setup I can see it though.

I've since found that the '93-7 LT1 camaro used a pressure plate like ours,
and their sprung hub disc is the recommended disc with a single mass
flywheel. SLP has this disc for $85, but I'm gonna shop a little more and
see what I can find.

It looks like with a sprung hub disc, RL ltwt shockproof, and higher idle, the problems of a single mass typically become very minimal. I guess I'll see soon.

ZRChris,

I am curious what you have found out about the pressure plate (camaro) that goes well with the DRM steel (20lbs) flywheel.

I have not called SLP, but $85 seems like a great price. Have you done anything yet? I may need one right away myself.

Let me clarify that you still use your original Corvette pressure plate. The Camaro uses the same design, but perhaps with different pressure or something, I don't know. So stick with the Corvette pressure plate.

The disc is what you want from the '93-7 LT-1 Camaro. I verified this with at least 4 reliable sources. The current price from SLP is $89.95. Even Advance Autoparts wants $140 and GM wants $220. Just can't beat it.

Whether or not to run RL Lightweight Shockproof is still up in the air. I'm searching for more info.

I have ended up with a Fidanza (sp?) flywheel via our good friend Kurt White. Mine was used but his new price still makes it reasonable to buy that one rather than DRM's cast iron.

I recently had a question about trans fluid myself, so I e-mailed ZF and here is what they said:

~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for your interest in ZF Industries, Inc., especially in the spare parts program for all 89 - 96 Corvette 6-speed manual transmissions.
>
ZF Industries, Inc. approved only two kind of transmission fluid for all 89 - 96 Corvette 6-speed manual transmissions.
>
You must either use GM Oil (GM Part # 1052931) or Castrol Formula RS 10W60.
~~~~~~~~~
I changed mine and went with the Castrol. I have had it in for a little over a month so far and everything is good.
