Default Went to the West Coast Corvette Challenge with Nitto drag radials

What a disaster! These tires have to be the worst tires ever for the drag strip. OK, why do I say this? Well, I usually use my BFG drag radials for the track and my Nitto’s for every day warm weather tires. They are fine for the street to give more traction then “street” tires, but on the track, TERRIBLE. Every time I tried to launch, I got bad wheel hop, if the rpm was too low and a lot of fishtailing if I launched too hard. It seems there was no medium for these tires. I usually run low 12’s with the BFG’s (I’m still learning how to get good 60’s), but ranged from high 12’s to 14’s with the Nittos. I was even fishtailing in the 1-2 gear change (that I’m pretty good at). Adjusting tire pressures did not help at all. I just wanted to post this to inform others not to get these tires for the track. The BFG’s are much better, although I don’t think their hard sidewalls are the best for the track. I am now looking into getting some MT ET Streets (radials), so I can get my 60’s down and decrease the chance of breaking something from the shock of a hard launch. On the other hand, the people that showed up for WCCC were great. Met a few that I have talked to here on the forum. If you have a chance, go to one of their events, as they are fun and the people there have a really good time.

OK, now the Nitto people to start attacking me. It is just a fact that the Nitto’s are only good to get decent traction on the street for a higher-powered car, not for the track.

Now from what I have heard and seen you have to get the Nittos Extremely hot to get them to hook. I have a set of MTs though and wouldn't change.

I agree, I fried those suckers. They are just too hard of a compound for drag racing at the strip.

WOULD LOVE TO GIVE THE K BELL A THRASH.
BUT... AND ITS A BIG BUT,I ONLY HAVE STOCK F1 GOODYEARS.

Ran a 1.8 60' time in the Nittos. Track preparation is important as well. What was you trap speed?

I think a set of MT Streets on a drag pack is in order for you

I have tried both at the track.. I can cut 1.6-1.7 on BFGs, 1.8s on nittos.. I agree that the nitto is too hard of a compound for track use... I drive my BFG's on the street now too.

My trap speed was about 114-113. I usually trap about 119-118. I attribute the trap speeds to the weather conditions, speed density was about 4,800 and I have the Nitto’s mounted on 18x10.5” ZO6 chromies, which weigh a ton. My psi were about 20-16 lbs., made no difference. Once I got going, I could feel that the car just doesn’t pull like it does with the BFG’s on 18x9.5 wagon wheels. I am planning to do a little test this week. I plan to make several 10 to about 70mph runs using both the Nittos and the BFGs and see the difference between them in ten mph increments using a Passport G-Timer. I will only report the increments where no shifting is involved so that it won’t be a factor.

Thanks,

Clayton from Las Vegas

I guess this is all personal opinion here.

I tried both tires, Nitto 305/35/18 and BFGs 315/30/18 at the same track, same day, obviously same driver. different cars but both Z06s trapped the same (114-115). I did 12.5 in my BFG cars and 12.4 in the Nitto car, with similar 60s. granted they're different cars. The time slips compared really well and was actually impressed with the Nitto even though it has a harder compound. both tires where the same pressure also, 25psi

Clayton, I was sliding as well, until the track cooled off that night.
I hooked on my last two runs, it was worth waiting for, 1.499 sixty foot time. But until then, it was rough!

But, if you choose to get the ET streets, you will be happier I am sure.
But still, if your putting a lot of HP to the ground, everyone has problems hooking!

Brilliant marketing plan. Sell a tire with like NO tread, and then make sure the tire only works when you brakestand the damn thing for five minutes!

If that's what I have to do, I might run out of gas. Again, Nittos are fine for the street, but not for the strip. I know some people say they need to be heated up alot, but I would rather heat them up a little and get good traction. Much of Nittos appeal is that the last longer then BFGs. But how much longer will they last if you have to heat the **** out of them?

Even though I will just get flamed for saying this.....

I have had great luck running NITTOS on various cars.
Most of which pull 60 foots in the Sub 1.6's making 600+ HP.
I always run them at 18psi of pressure in the tires.

Plus they are the only drag radial, that has ANY sort of street life.
As well as doesn't throw stones as bad once they cool down.

Best of luck with whatever decision on tire you pick
EA

PS: On my POS Cobra Mustang, it went 10.50's@137+ on 17" Nitto 275 drag radials on a 100% stock suspension, stock shocks, stock everything.

Stock?
Well, maybe the rear end?
10.5's on Nitto radials.... not impossible I guess, but very difficult to believe, if true, you must have a ton on the top end.
