Default Keyed Crank

Is there any way to KEY a crank that is already in the motor?

I know it can be pinned but i would like to key it if at all possible.

No way. pin it. The key groove has to be precision machined in the snout. It has to be the proper depth, width and square down the axis. That's not going to happen in the car. Pinning is effective and easily done.

1000%

I would just pin it in a few precise locations. Heck, if ya have to, just do it in 3 spots. It wont go anywhere then.

But I think 2 will be just fine..

Dont trust 1 location.

I can post pictures of what high HP does to a single pinning job. Not to mention the HUGE bill it cost to fix the tuners F'up. (that i paid for)

Just make sure you make a line-up marker so you don't have to keep rotating your balancer to figure out which way it goes if you ever have to remove and reinstall it.

It will be very hard to pin it with a aftermarket crank, especially drilling from the face-your best bet would be to use the ATI fixture and try it that way.

The crank can only be keyed in a milling machine. And it would have to be out of the motor.

Going to be doing this on my bro's car with afternarket balancer.

How do you drill balancer. The collar that ATI sells with their kit looks like it only does the crank ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it a radial or axial pinning kit? I prefer to pin them using the axial method from the front. My balancer came with a 3/16" keyway cut in it and I used a carbide bit to radius it for my stock crank so the pin would fit properly. I had the dampner hub replaced back to a 3/16" keyway slot since my Callies crank has a key cut in it from the factory.

I have one of those Vortech front crank pinning tools.

Balancer is the Powerbond http://www.byunspeed.com/product_inf...oducts_id=5776

It has a key way cut in it already.

I had the same issue and carefully radiused the keyway with a 1/4" carbide bit. the pin fit nicely when I was done.

should be 3/16 pins..... im going to be using 3/16 hardened flywheel dowels instead of the supplied pins for good measure.

I believe they were 1/4". I have them out now and will try to remember to measure them when I get home tonight. They came with the Maggie kit I believe.
