What's the consensus on ring gaps for boosted ls motors?Toying with the idea of putting in a set of wisecos and scat rods. I'll probably never push it past 800whp.

Like I said before you can find some gen 4 junk for it cheap I'd bet. I wouldn't just drop nice Pistons in since you are not honing to fit etc. I'll check if my friend has any take out gen 4 stuff since he is a hoarder lol.

I'd take that gen 4 stuff to 800 with good gaps. I tend to follow weiscos chart for ring gap.

I just found a set of brand new gen 4 rods for cheap. Gonna pick em up. Debating on going with the gm flat top pistons or finding some forged ones in that bore size that'll fit the stock gm wrist pin size. I'll probably just use a ball hone on the cylinders, you can still see the factory cross hatching.

The thing is unless they are super cheap pistons I can't see doing a forged setup and not having control of a quality finish hone with a torque plate and using the head studs that will be on the engine. After talking to my friend he has 7 gen 4 rods/pistons (engine had a bad hole) but the bob weight on the crank will change and you will need a fresh balance on the gen 3 crank (sounds like it will take some heavy metal and that adds up also).

It's a hard call as I'm either all in or on the cheap and these parts will be somewhere in the middle for you. I'd probably do the Wiseco's for say something between a 5.3-5.7 engine (saving more cylinder wall) and pay for a quality finish hone/bore and balance work. It will be a stout piece at that point. Either that or stock flat tops with just some balance work and flex hone.

basically when I'm finished it'll be an L33 rebuilt shortblock. I found a really good deal on the L33 flat tops. I haven't decided which heads i'm going with. I have my 243's which should put me at 9.9:1 or I could use the 317's I have and run it at 9.3:1. And I could mill the 317's and get it up to 9.5:1 which is what I want.

Good deal on the parts. It's a little much to not have balanced though.

I'll definitely pay to have the rotating assembly balanced. I figure I have to since the pistons and rods will weigh more than the ones that came in the motor and the crank is originally balanced to those.

Cool just checking This will be a nice solid combo with the proper ring gap. The reduced displacement is probably a better fit to your turbos also. Have you ever measured your exhaust wheel or know the turbine housing size by chance?

If you are going to take the Pistons out for any reason, I would send them out to be coated. I had my brand new diamond Pistons coated in my motor for the added extra protection.

At some point you have to draw the line and say this is a JUNKYARD build.. and not let the price get out of control, if a junkyard build is really what you want.

Just adding stock gen 4 pistons and rods to it and a good balance. I'll still be under the cost of a used L33 after I sell off all my spare parts.

That was more in response to the coating idea

I only say that because I've let a build on another car go overboard by what I call the NASA syndrome. You want to make sure x doesn't break, so you spend a little more money on it, then you have more money invested so you want to be really sure y doesn't break.. then you have more money in it, so you want to be really sure z is good enough too, and somewhere along the way you've tripled your budget, lol.. you get the idea

Sounds like you've got it under control. I'm looking forward to seeing it.. it's amazing what people have been getting out of "junkyard" builds on ls1tech

I'm all too familiar with that story.
I'm hoping too avoid going down that road. I already have concerns about the drivetrain living at the current power level.
