I know, I know. This is an old topic but here goes.
I took the car to the dealer (actually had it towed) about 6 months ago to have the recall service performed after the message came on in my driveway. No issues since then until now.
Monday I take the car in to replace the serpentine belt. I drive the car home and a short trip on Tuesday. Go out of town for a day and tonight the car battery is completely DEAD. Battery is only about 6 months old too. I jump start it and right away the "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" message pops up. ??????
I thought I read something about the car would shut down if the service column lock message comes on and you try to drive it.

Has this happened to anyone?
Try pulling the battery for a few minutes, I had the same scenerio and I was doing some electrical work, pulled the negative and when I was done, the DIC didn't say anything and I now hear the lock. No problems since.
I had the warning once and my column would not lock at all. It also had other codes thrown. Turned out a low battery condition effected the other systems. I pulled the fuse for the column lock, reset all the codes, drive the car more so the battery stays charged up and things have been fine.
Got car back from the dealer. They said the issue is with the BCM (module/computer). There is no problem with the column lock except that the message will stay on unless I replace the BCM for $1100! It is the module that controls a lot of the electrical systems in the car. Their guess is that it failed to shut all the lights off or something that discharged the battery. The "service column lock" message/indicator part of the BCM has failed too.
Decided not to replace for now unless the failures continue and I wind up with a dead battery on a regular basis.
