I want to wash my engine in my 2001 and get rid of minor grime. (My car has 24,000 miles so minor oil/dirt/grease; the car was previously in an accident, and both front inner and outer fenders are removed, together w/ the front bumper, and everying is very accessible). I want to clean the engine prior to reassembling the front end. I've read somewhere that it's not a good idea to use "Gunk" or similar engine cleaners on the C5.
Can I use an engine cleaner on the engine and plastic components? What is forbidden and why, and what works well. Is there anything I should avoid doing?
Bill.

Reason: clarify information
I havent tried it yet, but I hear use simple green spray it all over, then hose it off. I do spray it with the tire foam once in awhile to keep it nice and clean.

I have tried this and it works very well!! Follow with the new Hot Tire Dressing on the hoses and it looks great!!

Simple Green will work well. If the engine is not too dirty, just try spraying some Simple Green on a rag and then wiping it down. May not be any need to use a hose that way.
Simple Green works great. Spray it on, work the dirty areas with a brush & hose off. I've done this a few times. I use 303 Aerospace Protectant on all the plastic & rubber parts. Makes the engine compartment look like new.
