Default How much should a brake job cost?

My brakes need new pads and machining on the rotors... rip off Friendly Chevrolet of Dallas wants $550 for it, hahahaha! no way.
Just brakes comes in at $250 with lifetime replacement of pads.
Is just brakes too high?
I have a 2001 convert, no mods, just your basic brakes.

Yep. But everyone here will tell you to do it yourself. I just didn't have the time and felt comfotable with the shop that did it.

So let me be the second to say - do it yourself.

Napa rotors = $100.

Decent pads (personal choice depending on your needs)= around $110

Total parts cost = $210

Do it yourself in about 90 minutes = Priceless

But some guys aren't real comfortable with doing it themselves, have tools, have enough time, etc.

You don't have an hour out of your day to save several hundred dollars? Time is money and doing it yourself saves you money. Besides disc brakes are so much easier to change than drum brakes.

When I had my new rotors put on, I also changed the pads. Total labor for the removal and install was $133. Of course, my dealer only charges $43/hour labor.

Yea. I know. Own my own business. No way to stop and refocus. Just plain easier to have it done. Having not done it myself, I'm in no position to say, but no chance it would have been 60 minutes taking the first shot at it. I'm all for the DIY. I like putzing around with it.

If you're all for DIY, do it on a Sunday afternoon. It's really not a big deal. Four bolts on each wheel. That's all.

I look at this like, "what is your time worth". I haven't done my brake's in years because I really don't have the time nor do I make the time to do my own brake jobs.

I did make the time to lower my car and do a couple other mods, but with brakes? I just don't do them or my oil. My time is worth it to have a reputable place finish those projects. Just my .02

$550 is a little pricey.

Are there any tricks to know about, if you DIY? The Mustangs with anti-skid brakes had to have their calipers wound-in with a tool, and not just pushed in. Is it the same with the Vette calipers?

When I wanted to replace the factory rotors with drilled and slotted rotors, I got an estimate from a local mechanic. He wanted $400 for his labor. For that, I decided to do it myself. I figure if I can do it, anybody can do it. You will need a torque wrench, breaker bar, and an impact wrench does make the job a lot easier. If you've got the tools and the garage space, I say do it yourself. Just MHO!

If you were in Branson, I could recommend a great little brake shop. I supplied the drilled/slotted rotors and ceramic pads. He did the job in a couple of hours. $50.00 total labor charge.

These guys are right.....$550 is too much and alot is learned by doing it yourself. Haven't done brakes on my Corvette yet but have done all the rest of my cars and it is not that tough!
