i also have a triple black vette an 00 & what i have found out over the past 3 yrs since i have owend my car is the factory paint has alot of oarnge peel in it & everyyime i wash the car it leaves swirls in the paint so i try to buff it to take out the majority of the swirl marks & now since this idiot in a new full size dodge pick up has hit my front end I have opted to paint the car all over with ppg paint btw i have a friend with a 99 vert & has lamborghini oarnge & he has no swirl marks in his paint i really believe its the factory paint is just not up to par on what it could be, you would think for the amount of money we pay to have this car then to realize 2 yrs down the road your car paint is chipping because whoever painted the car didnt prep it well enough just my 02 worth
My triple black vert was a 50,000 driver when I bought it, so it had it's share of chips and road rash. I've learned to overlook the flaws and look at the overall beauty of my car. Wash it, wax it, and detail it. Most of all , enjoy it!

My 2000 FRC black/black had a tough life before I bought her. I have buffed the car out twice now, using a PC orbital buffer starting with 3M Swirl Remover, then Meguiars Scratch X, then 3 coats of Zaino Z5 and 2 coats of Z2-Pro. It still turns heads but the front facia has too many chip/dings to touch up, so I don't worry about where the next one will come from. Drive it and have fun.
My thoughts (and situation) exactly. Drive it and don't be obsessed with perfection. Zuti
I have an 01 triple Black. I get so disappointed every time I wash it. I seem to always find one or two new small paint chips. Seems like the car is deteriorating before my very eyes. I tried touch up paint but it never seems to look right.
One of the steps in my waxing process is to apply small dabs of the black-tinted turtle wax to the areas in question. After that and a finishing coat of NXT or Zaino I'm pretty happy with the results.
This has been my first and likely my last black car.
Best of luck!
Does the black-tint wax really help or make a difference in the chips and pings, or just make us feel better? I am a big Zaino fan on my triple black vert, but that just lets you see all the new nicks. I am sure that every color has the same amount of spots, but how close do you have to get? Do I even think about a bra for the beaut?
The paint on my triple black vert was driving me insane for the first two months of ownership. Every time I looked I found another fine scratch in the clearcoat. The front fascia had lots of tiny chips. I finally realized that there's nothing I could do to stop it. I still make every effort to care for the car but I won't let a minor scratch or stone chip get me down. These cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed.
I have to disagree with this though, ALX99. The reward is the looks and the compliments I get when the car is immaculate. When I turn around after I've walked away and look back at the car, THAT'S my reward! [/QUOTE]

This is my second vette, and they have both been black. It is a little more work, for sure, but I use the california duster frewquently, and Mother's Showtime (a detail spray) and they keep her looking great. I do the full on wash about every 2 weeks in the summer.
There are chips and dings here and there for sure, with 34K on it, it is bound to happen. But on the plus side, it really doesn't cost much to have the hood or nose repainted. I got a quote for a few hundred, and I will do that over the winter.
The plus side is when it shines, man, you can't even see a scratch, especially in the sunshine!
Don't want problems? Get a white vette. Then the primer underneath will match.
Don't like white? You're gonna be an unhappy camper. ALL cars get chips, scrapes and dings and none of them look good on a car.
You touch 'em up, you use the various "blob" eliminators, you do like I did, you get the whole front end repainted. You do what it takes if that's what's important.
My car looked like a family of spiders moved in and took over my paint, so I decided to try the meguires 3 step process with a orbital buffer and MAN what a difference! Heres my pics.... Click play at the top
The old black car challenge. Lots o nicks in my front too. Just keep loving it and clean her as good as you can. Agree w/ swirl mark remover and Zaino too.
I just plan on a new paint job in the next few years. Cleartastic perhaps after that.
very strange i have had at least 4 other black cars, the Vette being the 5th and its the only one i have had a problem with scratches. it got so annoying that i had the whole front end repainted and clear coated, and they still come back!! would i do it again ? yes,and i probably will never drive any car other than a black one
