Default DIY Battery Cover - Under $8.00

This morning's mod. Old battery cover wouldn't fit after getting a chrome fuse box cover from CreativeEngine Covers. Decided to cut a cardboard template. Went to HD and got a piece of 1/8 inch plywood for $2.59. Used my jigsaw to cut it out. As you can see in the first pic, it still needs to be trimmed a little more. Rustoleum paint and sandpaper (assorted sizes) brought the total to 7 dollars and some change.

Once I got it to fit, put the first coat of gloss black on it.

Figure I'll keep layering and sanding the paint till I'm satisfied. I know it's wood and NOT advisable for the engine compartment. Never intend to run the car with it in place. After I get it finished with clear coat and an extra 50th emblem that's lying around somewhere in my clutter, I ONLY intend to put it in place at shows once the engine is cooled.

So why not just buy a small sheet of 1/8" acrylic and cut it just like you did the wood? I'm sure Home Depot has it.

Looks nice.

I intend to do it in acrylic. This was an interim/quick fix solution. The HD, closest to my home, Lowe's and 2 hobby shops I went to this morning did not have any acrylic sheets in black.

I didn't know that Norm Abrams had a C5. I made one just like that out of plastic.

That's what I'm doing. I plan on painting the underside of it like they do with R/C cars, so it doesn't get chipped up.

You can use the clear polycarbonate from Home Depot. They sell it in various size sheets and you can paint ploycarbonate. This is something I was looking to do soon.

Post pics when you are complete.

Update: Finally got a 2 x 2 piece of acrylic. As soon as Rita passes and I can move all the patio furniture, etc. back to the pool area, I plan on cutting the final template which will accomodate the chrome fuse box cover. Once that's done, I'll finish off the engine bay and post pics. Have already promised to mail a couple of CF members the template.

Is this an easily reproduced template on your part? If so, could I get in on some of that action?
