I read an article about this in August's Car and Driver magazine, and coincidentally my local dealer's service manager was telling me about the "best" gasoline for our cars (you may be surprised): www.toptiergas.com
Does anyone know if all shell grades qualify, or only premium V-Power?
This is addressed in the site, but here's your answer:
.1 Retail Gasoline Performance Standards. The deposit control performance of unleaded gasoline conforming to section 1 of this document shall be met at the retail level in all grades of gasoline sold by a fuel company in all marketing areas of a selected nation.
Interesting question. I've used the Chevron, the Shell V-Power, and the Diamond-Shamrock Premium in the League City area south of Houston, and found that I get the best gas milage from the Diamond-Shamrock. There's also a cost savings at purchase. The mpg difference is between 1 to 3 mpg, which doesn't seem like much, but it does add up when you fill the tank at a lower cost. After I first noticed the difference over a year ago, I did several tanks while driving conservatively just to see if my initial observations were accurate. They were. So now I use the Diamond-Shamrock 98% of the time. I did not see a difference in power or knocking between the brands.
Since we here in the great state (conditon?) of Kalifornia have to endure all sorts of gasoline butchery, it takes some searching to find an acceptable Corvette gasoline. I find that V-Power and Chevron are the best in top tier gasolines. British Petroleum(BP) and ARCO have combined and we only get ARCO here. ARCO is considered the worst gas you can put in any car. Deposits in fuel injectors, plugs, valves, etc. I use EXXON with success although it doesn't yet conform to the top tier requirements. It is probably lacking in detergents as others are.
Good luck.

I get 93 octane at Sam's club and it works just fine. I don't know who produces the Gas but it is always consistanty good. No pings at all and good MPG and cheaper then any gas around here.
